Night, Mother 23.10.2020

During the opening weekend of ‘night, Mother, we heard audience reactions that varied from a call for immediate hospitalization and medical treatment, to empathy for how a person could reach the point of deciding that suicide is an act of self-care. Whatever the viewpoint, everyone who has seen ‘night, Mother has been moved by it. The decision to step off of the bus is one that is bound to impact those who surround that person. Following the September 22 performance of... ‘night, Mother will be a round table talk back led by mental health professionals Dr. Lilly Brown and Lauren Rosensky Flanagan. Starting with reactions to the play, we will discuss topics such as resources for those facing a decision to commit suicide, for both the person and the family of the person. Tickets are available at https://www.davedirects.com/tickets Dr. Brown is an Assistant Professor of psychology in the department of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania in the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety. Dr. Brown received her Ph.D. at UCLA, and was the recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. She completed a pre-doctoral internship at Brown University where she was awarded a Brown Internship Research Grant for a grant on mechanisms underlying suicide risk for psychiatric inpatients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Brown’s research and clinical interests are in the development and testing of evidence-based treatments for anxiety and trauma-based disorders, particularly in those with high suicide risk. She is interested in disseminating evidence-based practice into the community, and in further developing treatments for patients with anxiety at high risk for suicide. Ms Flanagan is a Masters level clinician who has been in the field for over 37 years. She holds certifications in Psychodrama, as an Employee Assistance Professional and Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She is currently working with the Malvern Institute as coordinator of the ROC (Recovery Oriented Community) Family Program. During her time in the mental health field, she has performed a variety of roles including management of programs and departments as well as serving as primary therapist, mentor and educator. Her expertise is in group psychotherapy and psychodrama with a focus on trauma, eating disorders, women's issues, and co-occurring mental health and addiction issues. Lauren's undergraduate degree is acting and directing and she is honored to be a part of a process that acknowledges the importance of the arts in healing. https://www.davedirects.com/tickets

Allison Deratzian, who plays Jessie in 'night Mother, commented: This subject has been much on my mind of late, partly because of the struggles of several friends, and partly because of my current theatrical project. One of the reasons I have been so determined to bring Night, Mother to the local stage is we *need* to be having these conversations. This issue is tragic and uncomfortable and those are the very reasons we need to face and discuss it.
