Mary’s response to the angel is remarkable. I’m sure she must have felt scared and confused, but she was willing to be used by God. This is a good reminder for all of us. Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible. Then Mary said, Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word. And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:36-38

We will continue to read in Luke 1 as we Journey to Christmas together. Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I [g]do not know a man? And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Luke 1:34-35

Today in Journey To Christmas we are continuing to read Mary’s story of her encounter with the Angel. But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. Luke 1:29-33

We’re less than two weeks away from Christmas day and we hope you’re enjoying the Journey to Christmas. Today’s reading shifts from Mary to Joseph. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. Luke 2:4-5

Caesar Augustus was the most powerful ruler ever known in the Mediterranean world. He wanted history to remember him as such. It’s December 7th and we’re beginning to read Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus. We’ll pick it up in Luke 1:26-28: Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!

Here is one of the greatest prophecies about Jesus proclaimed seven centuries in advance of its fulfillment explicitly and only in Him. But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting. Micah 5:2

Isaiah 7:14 is one of the most beautiful prophecies that look forward to the virgin birth of the Messiah. Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
