Augustinian Defenders of the Rights of the Poor (A.D.R.O.P.) 11.04.2021

Have mercy on me, God, in accord, with your merciful love; in your abundant compassion blot out my transgression - Psalm 51:3 When we begin to alienate people in our community, we lose sight of the gifts that they can bring to society. In this way, we eliminate the opportunity to repent and isolate our brothers and sisters. As a society, we have the free will and ability to decide who gets compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. In the spirit of this Lenten season, let us pray for those who are transitioning out of incarceration, that they may receive compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. May they have the opportunity to repent. #dignity #lent2021 #mercy

Today we begin the 40 days of our Lenten journey. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This Lent, may we expand our vision of community, especially to those considered to be on the fringes of society. Let us consider the ways that we exclude and alienate others by our words and actions. May we pray for the grace to love radically, fast from bigotry, and give more of ourselves towards creating the radical vision of community that the Trinity has for us. A blessed Ash Wednesday to all. #Lent #AshWednesday #dignity

In 2019, the USSCB put forth six people of African descent from the United States as suggestions for sainthood. In light of Black History Month, we would like to highlight two of them today. Venerable Henriette Delille was compassionate, forgiving and merciful woman living in New Orleans, LA. In 1842, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family, the first religious order to accept women of African descent. She was determined to help those in need and she be...lieved in justice. She was not afraid to do what was right. Venerable Fr. Augustus Tolton, born an enslaved man right before the Civil War, lived during a time when American seminaries refused to accept black men. However, he did not allow his racial background to prevent himself from fulfilling his calling to serve God. Fr. Tolton went to Rome to study to become a priest and was ordained at the age of 31. As the first black, ordained priest in the United States, he dedicated his life to serving others. Venerable Henriette Delille and Venerable Fr. Augustus Tolton, pray for us. #blackhistorymonth #BlackCatholicSaints #dignity #WeMustRememberHistory

October 16th was World Food Day. Here are some tips and ideas from the Canadian Augustinian Centre for Social Justice: Promote Food Safety Respect Food Safety Regulations Provide Good Working Conditions Invest in sustainable, resilient food systems Make healthy diets appealing, available and affordable Share knowledge Share expertise or technologies... Adopt sustainable practices Adopt a sustainable approach to products from the planet’s natural resources Avoid food price volatility Changing price at random Diversify for healthy diets Fact: Did you know that you reduce your carbon footprint when you buy produce that’s in season? When food is out of season in one part of the world it has to be imported and travel a long way before it arrives at your local market. Eating seasonal food can also be riper, tastier and more nutritious #foodjustice #sustainability #healthydiets #dignity

While we’re happy that we get to offer many charitable ministries like the Unity Clinic, Adeodatus, MMOC, Caritas Populorum, and ESOL classes; we know that this work is not enough. We also need to contribute in any way we can in combating the roots of injustice. As the election draws nearer, we hope that you’ll remember all those that we serve in A.D.R.O.P. when you vote. #dignity #charity #justice #qotd #augustinian

A.D.R.O.P.’s Augustinian Volunteer, Sheena, with Fr. Paul, founder of Adeodatus, working in the Healing Garden. The Healing Garden is a place of contemplation and offers the space to encounter God. Many people come to the garden seeking different things, but the garden always offers the same thing: peace, shelter, prayer, community and - of course - healing. #adeodatus #gardening #dignity #spiritualitytime
