Adult Enrichment Lancaster 16.11.2020

As UDS Foundation pauses today in remembrance of 9/11, we wanted to give you an update on a special living tribute to Deora Frances Bodley, the youngest person ...to die on Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville during the 9/11 attacks . On February 2, 2014, a big eyed Chocolate Brown Labrador female puppy was born. It had been decided she would be one of the first puppies to be raised at our first Pups in Prison facilities. The prison liaison asked if they could name her, Deora, in honor of Deora Frances Bodley, Less than a dozen miles away from the Flight 93 crash site is where Deora the puppy received her training. She even had the honor of meeting the real Deora’s mother as they both visited the memorial on the same day. Just as Deora Frances Bodley loved to help people, Deora the Chocolate Lab continues to provide her person, Brian, loving companionship. Due to complications from diabetes, born with Polio and legally blind, Brian depends on Deora to get him his phone, operate light switches, open doors and hand him his towel after a shower. His mild depression changed when Deora entered his life. We are proud to have the opportunity to honor Deora Frances Bodley through our Service Dog Program. On behalf of the entire UDS Foundation, our hearts go out today to everyone who has lost a loved one in the 9/11 attacks.

June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, commemorates the day slavery came to an end in 1865, two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. This article from Ben & Jerry's explains what took so long for slavery to actually end as well as what Juneteenth means today. Take today to learn, educate and take action against racial injustice!

Independent Living Services would like to give special thanks to Lancaster County Community Foundation. They have awarded ILS $2,000 from their Lancaster Cares ...COVID-19 Response Fund. This money will be used to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our caregivers to keep our employees and clients safe. Our clients are considered to be some of the most vulnerable to contract COVID-19 due to their age and pre-existing conditions. Thanks to this grant we can continue to provide critical services to our clients during the pandemic and beyond. THANK YOU LCCF for this much needed funding! To learn more about LCCF or the Covid-19 Response fund visit their website at https://www.lancfound.org/lancaster-cares-covid-19-respons/

Sometimes, Wednesday's are hard, and sometimes you just need to get comfortable and make the best of it. It's kind of like our Staffing Supervisor's daughter who decided to watch her pre-school learning videos this morning from a different vantage point! Whatever the direction your Wednesday takes you, we hope you are having a super day!

Last week we held our first Zoom social for the participants and staff of Adult Enrichment. While it was great seeing everyone, we are anxiously awaiting the time we can all be together again, making memories, sharing laughs and seeing each other face-to-face. In the meantime, share a picture or send a message that we can post. Tell us how you are spending your quarantine time, tell a joke or just say hi... we love hearing from you!

Jayann's family sent us this message: The McCue's are all hanging in there the best we can, we all are feeling fine. Staying home with the exception of going for groceries and to the drug store for medication pick ups. Dad and Jayann are taking walks 1 to 2 times a day (weather permitting). Mom is still working Monday through Friday with a lot of safety measures put into place. Examples are we all have to have our temperature's taken as soon as we walk in the door. We're al...l required to wear face masks (all of our production workers always wore masks and wear gloves everyday before all this happened so it only changed for the office staff). I have to clean and sanitize my work area before starting to work every morning. I'm thinking I will be doing this religiously every day even when this is not a requirement. Jayann was scheduled to attend Beacon Lodge Camp beginning of June, but, we just received a letter that the 2020 camping season has been cancelled. (Probably for the best for everyone.) Jayann sending prayers to all and wishes to say hi to all her friends at AE she’s missing everyone. We wish you and your family's good health and best wishes.
