In New Orleans, one place gay and trans people could gather in still-closeted 1970s was the UpStairs Lounge, a gay bar at the corner of Chartres and Iberville S...treets. It was there #OTD 1973 that someone started a fire. Many patrons could not escape as flames whipped through the club. On that terrible night 32 people died. Until the 2016 shooting at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub, it was the deadliest mass killing of LGBT people in American history. It remains the deadliest fire in New Orleans. But for years the tragedy was barely spoken of. The police never questioned or arrested the chief suspect. Some bodies were never claimed. Only two churches allowed memorial services. Three of the victims remain unknown. Today a plaque marks the site of the tragedy. It reads: At this site on June 24, 1973 in the Upstairs Lounge, these thirty-two people lost their lives in the worst fire in New Orleans. The impact went far beyond the loss of individual lives, giving birth to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender rights movement in New Orleans. There can be no justice - either social justice or environmental justice - without an end to racism, white supremacy, and anti-Blackness. If we are to create a ...thriving, sustainable future, each of our families, circles, communities, organizations, movements, and institutions must take responsibility for our positionality, for our privilege, and stand with Black communities. The future we are working toward - one in which the people and our environment are protected and strengthened - is impossible if we stay silent, stay neutral, or stay on the sidelines.
