We are saddened to hear that American artist #BarryLeVa, passed away on Sunday at the age of 79. Barry Le Va is considered one of the leading figures of post-studio and process art of the late 1960s. His early efforts utilized poppy seeds, small stainless steel ball bearings, white chalk, iron oxide, and pieces of felt which he dispersed across expanses of gallery floors. Our current artist-in-residence Polly Apfelbaum had this work (among other references) in mind when she ...began showing stained velvet workslater nicknamed Fallen Paintingson museum and gallery floors in the early 1990s. Over time, Le Va’s installations developed more heft and were sometimes composed of large aluminum spheres, fiberboard discs, and wooden planksall of which he used for his site-specific project in Beaver College’s Richard Fuller Gallery in 1982. Intended to impede the viewer’s movement about the gallery, the individual elements could be read as traces of the artist traversing the given room as the composition developedtraces of Le Va drawing in space. FALLfest 2020: Together//Apart LIVE at https://sites.google.com//Judith-Taylor-virtual-gall/home Judith Taylor Virtual Gallery Virtual opening reception: December 22, 2020, 6:00 PM ... (Please email [email protected] for a Zoom invitation) "The early signs of frost may be setting upon campus but the students enrolled in Arcadia University Department of Art&Design programs still have thoughts of fall and change on their minds. As the Winter Solstice approaches we bring you "FALLfest 2020: Together//Apart", a student-curated exhibition of over 80 pieces by more than 40 exhibitors, consisting of varied majors, years of study, and with contributions from several alumni. The unifying motif is that of connection in a year filled with separation and collaboration with miles in between. At the heart of the exhibition is art and artist as a lifestyle not job or career, as made evident with much of the work being created outside the purview of assignment or specified course. Much of the work speaks to the artists that made it created of their own accord during a time when they needed it the most. A tribute to the creative spirit found in every sketchbook, Adobe file, kiln, and studio. Juried by: Madison Cline, Pamela Ojopi, Christopher Reistle, Perri Schlosser and Hanna Wu
