On view now, Collecting Across Cultures includes textiles and kimonos, like this one with gold embroidered pine trees. In Japanese culture, red and gold symbolize happiness and wealth respectively. Pine trees represent long life, courage, good luck, and New Year’s celebrations.

This lively Harlem street scene includes text that references the Civil Rights movementsuch as a sign for CORE, the Congress of Racial Equalityas well as cultural landmarks like the Apollo Theater.
