Peers not only give up their time but each time they help someone they give a little of themselves. So proud of the newly trained peers! #atap #dc21 #FTI #steamfitterslocal420 #Bricklayerslocal1 #painters2011

On September 18th and 25th, ATAP held their Mental Health Awareness Seminar and Peer Advocate Training. This would not have been possible without the trainers who volunteered their time. We would like to give a special thank you to Pat McGovern, Charles Wolfe, and Kim Hofmann. Your ongoing support and involvement with ATAP programming is appreciated.

ATAP MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY Within the construction industry we seem to have our concrete foundation well fenced in. On the outside we are proud to display our strong durable exterior but what about our inner foundation? We tend to leave those feelings buried deep within ourselves often viewed as a weakness or cracks in a perfect foundation. The construction industry is an extremely demanding job physically and over time will wear your body down often working long hard h...ours in harsh elements. The summer months where the sun is so hot it literally burns your body and the winter months so cold it goes through every bone in your body. These jobs leave us with little to no time for our families and support systems. We are also faced with long periods of unemployment leaving us to lose valuable sleep wondering when the next job might come or become anxious and stressed about how to put food on the table for our kids or pay tuition. When we take a deep look at these factors it really comes as no surprise to me that the construction industry is the number one industry in accidental opioid overdose deaths and the number one industry in death by suicide. Over the past ten years we have invested in raising our safety standard to protect our members but when it comes to mental health and substance use disorder, we are suffering in silence. You can’t mitigate these issues with caution tape. you need to have conversations and a plan of action. these conversations are uncomfortable but so are attending funerals. Today this conversation begins. Steamfitters Local Union 420 Glaziers Local 252 IUPAT District Council 21 Insulators Local 14 Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers #1 Pa.-De.
