I get asked all the time how you guys should be cleansing your skin. Specifically, you guys ask me if you should be pre-cleansing or double cleansing or using any oil. . In the morning feel free to do a basic one time only cleanse, assuming you did not fall asleep without washing your face the previous night. . in the evening you need to make sure that your cleanser can actually cleanse your skin. This means that a pre-cleanse should be done first with an oil so that the o...il can break through the sebum, sunscreen, and makeup. . This is because anything oil-based is not water-soluble meaning it does not dissolve in water. Waterproof makeup, skin's sebum, and waterproof sunscreen are all oil-based and therefore need more than regular water-based cleansers to remove them from your skin. . This is where pre-cleansers come in. If you remember back to science class- "like dissolves like" - you need oil to dissolve oil. Pre-cleansers are different from cleansers in that they are oil-based, but still water-soluble. Because of these properties, pre-cleansers are able to remove oil-based impurities. They work by first attracting the oil-based contaminant away from the skin. Then, the contaminant becomes trapped as the pre-cleanser surrounds it. When water is applied they rinse off carrying the oily impurities with them. . With stubborn pollutants gone, regular cleansers can wash away dirt and makeup that were stuck underneath the oil-based impurities thus allowing a truly thorough cleanse. By pre-cleansing, skin is the cleanest it can be which allows for maximum absorption of other products. . it’s important to choose a pre-cleanser that is natural and that does not have pore-clogging oils.
