Next open segment bowl glue-up completed and ready for the lathe. The white areas in the top seven layers are temporary support spacers held in place by two-faced tape. If all goes well, they will be removed after the bowl is turned to leave the brown areas protruding upward individually like flower petals.

This dough bowl is Hackberry with walnut base and black Milliput ring at joint. The piwa is Hickory. This is the bowl from which my previous Hackberry bowl was cored. The coring tool led off too deep at the bottom. So I parted off the bottom and added the walnut base. Then while turning the bowl the walnut tenon failed. I usually salvage anything that doesn’t work out according to plan. But I was so frustrated I discarded it for firewood. My wife, who makes her own bread, res...cued it from the firewood pile and asked me to turn it into a dough bowl for her. This was also my first attempt at making and installing a piwa to stabilize a crack. Very humbling experience, requiring 15 attempts before I finally got one acceptable. Size is 13.38 dia. x 4.88 ht.; 4.81 dia. base; .56 wall It is finished with Danish Oil to soak and harden grain, followed by General Finishes Bowl Finish. See more

This vase was an experiment to test the wave press I designed to mold waves from wood shavings created when turning items on the lathe. The material is an unknown wood with wave made of pressed Spectra-ply shavings. Base is Purpleheart and same Spectra-ply to show the source of the wave material. Size is 6.12 dia. x 5.0 ht. with 2.94 dia. base and .38 wall in top section. Lower section of inside begins at 3.13 dia. This two step inside wall was turned this way to keep the ellipse that appeared as I turned the inside. Finish is gloss lacquer.
