Fun little project we started! We had a piece of property that has never been tapped but we plan to very soon! First a little strategic planning and process ...has to happen before a tubing installation. There was a fair stand of sugar and red maple on this ground but were being choked out by a heavy beech population. The beech have a disease and are dying so we are thinning them out along with the dead ash trees due to the emerald ash borer. This will allow the maple to thrive and benefit from maximum sunlight and eliminate growth competition. The logs are sold to the pulp mill and used to create wood products. We then will cut up the remaining tops for firewood in our evaporator. This will give us about two years of wood supply for our syrup production! After the tops are cleaned out and tubing installed we will go in and plant a mix of sugar and red maples in some of the open areas to try and produce a better stand and maple tap count. It will take 30-50 years before the new plantings are Able to be tapped but our future sugar makers will love us for it! This is just the first of many sections of woods on our property that we plan to implement this process!
