Tip - CLUCKING Clucking is a conditioned response. I read somewhere that clucking goes back to Xenophon - (A Greek, who lived in 400 B.C., who wrote the first f...ully preserved manual on the riding horse. It is entitled "The Art of Horsemanship". Xenophon differs from other ancient writers on the horse in that he urges his readers to know the horses "psyche," it's mentality. He knew that an animal which had confidence in the understanding and good will of it's rider would more effectively respond to the commands of the rider. Xenophon encouraged a mutual respect between man and horse.) Anyway, horseman have been clucking to their horses for a long time. And it is interesting how clucking makes a difference, as far as bringing up the adrenaline in horse. Clucking doesn't mean for a horse to move forward or to gain speed. Instead, I liken it to influencing the RPMs within a motor. It brings the RPMs up, makes his heart beat a little faster, brings his adrenaline and energy up - he becomes aware. Then we decide in which direction he is to go - could be forward, back, lateral or a spin - and we direct that energy into that activity. But typically, we should be able to sit on a horse with reins and cluck to him and he should just wake up and wait for our direction. Five Easy Pieces Exercises 1. LATERAL FLEXION Piece number one is getting the horse to yield his nose to the side as a response to you just lightly moving the ...rein. As you hear and read again and again in this program - the KEY to achieving success in a performance training program is having a horse that will do everything you ask with a soft and resistance - free neck. By staying with this exercise until your horse will respond to a rein that still has some slack in it. I know, and you will too, that he is giving his head and neck willingfully willfully and not being forced. Again you do this exercise both to the right and the left. 2. MOVING THE SHOULDER Piece number two consists of moving the shoulder to the right or left, independent of the head. That is, if you are asking the shoulder to go to the right, the horse's head will stay to the left. To do this you'll start with exercise number one left as discussed above, and then by moving your rein towards the horse's withers and engaging your left leg if you need to you'll get the horse to actually step across his right foot with his left one, moving his shoulders to the right. You work on this extra size bolt to the right and the left. 3. MOVING THE RIB CAGE Piece number three involves moving the rib cage to the right and the left, while keeping the horse's body as straight as possible. Your goal is to move his his body as one piece. While this sounds easy, it can be a real challenge because he's probably going to want to move his shoulders first and you can't let him. 4. MOVING THE HIPS Piece number four is moving the hips in one direction without the shoulders moving too, and then being able to do the same exercise on the other side. We'll spend a lot of time on this in both the workbook and the video, so I don't elaborate anymore here, but this move will become the foundation for your lope departures and lead changes, as well as giving you a tool for a horse that starts to drift in the back on his turnarounds. 5. PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER Piece number five is the test. It's where you put all the pieces together to see if you have a rough spot that needs extra work. It consists of backing your horse in a circle with his body aligned to the track of the circle that he's on, that is, hip and nose to the inside of the circle, and shoulders to the outside. To do this you will need hip control, shoulder control and a horse that is soft in the poll. Pictures below: 1. Doing exercise 3 of 5 Easy Pieces - moving rib cage 2. I like this! You matter When you love the work you do and the people you do it with, you matter. ... When you are so gracious and generous and aware that you think of other people before yourself, you matter. When you leave the world a better place than you found it, you matter. When you continue to raise the bar on what you do and how you do it, you matter. When you teach and forgive and teach more before you rush to judge and demean, you matter. When you touch the people in your life through your actions (and your words), you matter. When kids grow up wanting to be you, you matter. When you see the world as it is, but insist on making it more like it could be, you matter. When you inspire a Nobel prize winner or a slum dweller, you matter. When the room brightens when you walk in, you matter. And when the legacy you leave behind lasts for hours, days or a lifetime, you matter. Seth Godin
