Prof. Batbaatar performed a Trashcano demonstration for his Physical/Environmental Geology students this week, using liquid nitrogen and a water-filled trash can. Submersing a plastic bottle filled with liquid nitrogen initiates a gas-driven eruption, and the response is similar (but safer!) to what happens to volatiles dissolved in a magma during ascent the driving force behind most explosive eruptions.
