Downtown's last, older warehouse. Multiple stately stories with a nearly 90'x30' footprint. Right up against the proposed river access park at Industrial Point, with design connections to the existing sidewalk and future trail networks (throughout town and to Hawley.) Born after September 1903 but on/before March 1912, where it shows up on sheet 3 of the Sanborn map collection as Honesdale Union Cut Glass Company. Condemned as Honesdale Ambulance Co. since a decade's ago eart...hquake. -- Hasn't fallen into the West Branch Lackawaxen yet and still stands straight as a cliff face wall. What if a new steward rallied investment to save this beauty? Make for one heck of a theater and mixed use studio, small affordable residential space. Would love to have a place like this someday for festivals and assorted C'town projects. Would equally love for it to continue existing in any capacity, beyond a cleared site. What would you recreate in an inspired, brick castle? Perhaps the community can campaign for options. -- #LocalLandscape #Canaltown #SaveTheBrick #WhatIfHonesdale...? See more

With upcoming holidays and small biz support in mind, it's helpful to remember how walkable it is between all of downtown Honesdale, PA's shops and restaurants And with alternative gifting and community projects being a big deal this year, we don't mind shouting out the Clean Energy Co-op (recent Wayne Economic Development Corporation Innovator of the Year award winner) having gift memberships available >> https://www.cleanenergy.coop/join

Feeling locally inspired this Friday. Reminded that the trail project connecting Honesdale & Hawley was favorably studied (w/ over 90% of 1K+ survey respondents) and delivered just this year! - Might seem like ages ago b/c time doesn't work the same anymore but the foundation for future plans and projects between Hawley & Honesdale, along the Lackawaxen River, Old D&H, PA Route 6, and the Stourbridge Line was only delivered in May! Quite the year. Keep up this project's chatt...er. Share your ideas. Ask local leaders to champion the trail. New plans should reference this trail’s plan. New projects should highlight trail connections. Honesdale & Hawley should be best buds and this trail can be our riverside-reunion. - #WeWantTheTrail and look forward to walking, biking, fishing, paddling, and train hopping alongside you all in the future... and the future beyond that where trail connections extend east through Pike County and west into the Lackawanna River Valley. #LocalLandscape Cheers, #Canaltown - #WhatIfHonesdale...? - Trail friends Honesdale, PA Greater Honesdale Partnership Downtown Hawley Partnership Wayne Tomorrow US Route 6 in Pennsylvania PA Route 6 Artisan Trail Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau DiscoverNEPA Honesdale River Project Woodland Design Associates, Inc. The next Honesdale Borough Council meeting is slated for 10/19, in person and up at Honesdale High School. We've helpfully had remote attendance options through this pandemic season. Increased access to local government affairs was a welcome silver lining during this time of collective challenges. Ideally, this added transparency and these remote options continue going forward. #LocalLandscape #Canaltown To encourage continued progress, contact H'dale Boro at >> http://honesd...aleborough.com/departments//agenda-deadlines/ << To hear the most recent meeting, visit our library >> https://archive.org/details/@canaltown552 << See more

NOTE: an updated map showing where Columbus Ave has been completed since posting this. It's available on the maps page of our website. ORIGINAL POST: We tend to focus our cartography on Honesdale but recently looked into downtown Hawley for the Wayne County (PA) Historical Society and sussed out where US Route 6 in Pennsylvania (as we know it) runs, in relation to what was once a set of three neighborhoods islanded off by water ways and railroad tracks. This map is a remix of the 1872 Beers Atlas. It shows the approximate course of today's main road and compares historic road names to ones we know now. #LocalLandscape Cheers, #Canaltown

We were happy to return the gift of well grown food recently by making an interactive google map connecting local food to mouths. To extend that gift, we're open sourcing the KML (google maps) file. Any one and everyone can use it in their mapping projects. Feel free to link over for your #LocalLandscape mapping pleasure. Happy and Healthy Wednesday Evening! Cheers, #Canaltown

A farmer pal recently asked if we could make a map showing farm and pantry locations. You can take this map for a spin here >> https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer << While this isn't a complete snapshot, it's a geographic story we're happy to tell b/c connecting food to mouths is important right now. And the beauty of interactive maps is they can be easily and incrementally changed. Thanks for the initial inspiration, B. Fox and to Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan ...County for a neighboring example! Farms include Anthill Farm Agroforestry, Bialecki Farms, The Big G Organic Farms, Creamworks Creamery, Far Away Farms, The Farm at Mill Run, Fertile Valley Farm, Good Find Farm, Hardler Farms, Journey's End Farm, Quails R-US Plus, Salem Mountain Farm, Twin Brook Farms, White Stag Farms, Willow Wisp Organic Farm, and Wolfe Springs Farm. -- Great food panty information previously listed by Wayne Tomorrow. -- Farmers' Markets include Callicoon Farmers' Market, The Cooperage Project, Hawley Farmers Market, Narrowsburg Farm Market, and Wayne County Farmers Market. -- Lots of other grocery and super market outlets round things out but we may have reached out limit to tag pages. -- Map locations include links and phone numbers publicly available online. This is open source, community cartography. We mapped what we could and share it freely, to extend the gift of well grown food and provisions made available in this time of need. Have a happy and healthy Friday! Yours in the #LocalLandscape, #Canaltown. See more

What are we getting on about with this map? Well, it helps us tell the story of how parking requirements and the administration of zoning ordinances can blockade downtown development in #Honesdale. We critique Borough Council's recent decision to stop progress with a new #LocalLandscape essay here >> https://www.canaltown552.com/watch << This shared slowdown is a great time for planning and reflection, particularly with upcoming Downtown Honesdale Revitalization Plans (Greater Honesdale Partnership -- Derck & Edson, LLC) excitedly in mind. If we’re not accommodating revitalization now, when else is a good time to start? Stay safe out there, neighbors. Cheers, #Canaltown

We recently embraced a lovely opportunity to propose some planning concepts for the upcoming Downtown Honesdale Revitalization Plan (DHRP). The consultation stars did not align and we did not get selected for the project but we 1) enjoyed the experience of putting together some ideas for how such a plan could be created and 2) are always happy to dip into the downtown H'dale inspiration cycle that fuels us so often :) In the open source spirit, the proposal we drafted can be ...found here, sans admin legalese >> https://www.canaltown552.com/library << under plans. It features a conceptual plan section on walkability and parking beginning on page 9. General Neighborhood Note: when the DHRP'ing begins, we encourage you all to keep your ears open and jump into the public portions of the process. Online surveys, public meetings, and #LocalLandscape conversations are all key elements in these efforts and public participation is vital to healthy community action. At a time like this, the health of our community is at the top of our mind. To hammer home that point, this video features two bunnies chomping down on spinach. Stay safe out there, friends. Sincerely, #Canaltown

Things are slowing down a bit as uncertainty spirals around us. In these moments where we're all making choices that value collective good over personal benefit, we're presented with special opportunities. Like chances to all lend hands in taking care of each other with the gifts of whatever we've got. And taking time for reflection and restoration we probably don't make enough room for regularly. Many around us are doing what they can. Restaurants are offering takeout. Music...ians are giving remote lessons. People are using social media to check in with others they're seeing less often. Some of us have more options than others to weather this storm so we should keep our ears to the ground and our eyes on our feeds for those in need. Our minds have been partially with those around us who create things for a living. Being in festival mode each year means regularly connecting with artists and makers and supporters of art and things that are made. We plan as far ahead as possible but don't truly know what the C'town festival season looks like this year. When the time comes for the shared celebrations we've loved putting on the last half dozen years, we'll have you all's backs. Last year we began experimenting with gift economics to re-imagine some systems and make sure we have maximum accessibility. This year will be no different but we'll be expanding however we can. A lot of our musician, photographer, and other creative friends have recently lost gigs and the ability to support themselves by sharing their craft. We feel you, as neighbors in common. We're enriched by the same soil and are in this together. When we reach the other side of this moment, if you want to join us in #festivaltown, we'll make sure you get a seat, without additional financial stress. These are unique times but our community is resilient and our neighborhood bonds are strong. From the ground up, we have vast potential to overcome many of the challenges we're presented with and remake things with sustainable expressions as needed. May we all find strength among our family, friends, and neighbors in these trying times. Lots of ! Yours in the #LocalLandscape, #Canaltown

The feasibility study for a trail connection between Honesdale and Hawley is in its final review stage. It says the possibility is real and achievable. Public comment is still being accepted and can be delivered here >> http://www.waynecountypa.gov/forms.aspx?FID=80 << If you haven't already, now is a great time to join the discussion by sharing your voice of support, concern, and anything in between by following that link. We're pumped about the trail prospect and just submi...tted the following comments, minus the hashtaged amendments we made for social posting purposes :) We're a #LocalLandscape landscape biz/org/collective in Honesdale that's extremely in favor of a trail connection to Hawley, on one side of the Lackawaxen or the other or, ideally, both. This trail concept is transformative in that it makes progress on most fronts imaginable. Advancing shared objectives in the categories of transportation, recreation, quality of life, economic development, outside tourism, inside residency, community health, social justice, property valuation, environmental stewardship, resource equity, housing, infrastructure, employment, arts & culture, education, migration, village resiliency, etc. etc. etc. can be possible with a single project. Activating this trail corridor is one such project. Connecting two of Wayne County's largest community hubs of culture/population/services/commerce/etc. with a trail and alternative-to-automobile travelway equally serves young, old, resident, visitor, hiker, commuter, and more. Then, as a bonus, it addresses the above categories of attention many of us focus on improving every day! It's an extremely rare opportunity to invest in infrastructure that touches so many of an area's diverse interests and goals while benefiting such a wide array of stakeholders yet, here we are, presented with the potential for just that. This study concludes that it's feasible to envision and then make something epic, in the image of accessibility, inclusion, and bringing people together. We plan to work on seizing that opportunity with all of our available in-house and shared resources. Yours in the neighborhood, #Canaltown

-- Despite official efforts, some alternative spaces become plazas of activity. https://www.canaltown552.com/watch/publicdiscourse -- These places emerge directly out of our neighborhood's soil, as organic community hubs of assembly and speech that don't necessarily need sunlight to grow. They, more simply, just need to be accessible. -- Public perception may waver but certain uses of shared space are inherently part of the #LocalLandscape. It’s helpful to imagine what if scenarios when the slightest changes create whole new points of view. This can remind us of inspiration cycles in perpetual activation and the abundance of opportunities spiraling around us. Creating and sharing are actions we choose. Parts of freedoms shared by everyone. What we share with our neighbors, we also share with ourselves. Monuments of another time, as seen on a holiday weekend. Following old railroad trails through the #LocalLandscape led to some legit Wayne County oases. One on public land. Another just off a public road’s right-of-way. Methodology: 1) note where railroads used to go 2) cross reference locations with older and newer maps/aerial photography 3) field visit spots where bridges don’t seen to have been removed, using data gathered from step two 4) enjoy stone arch visuals near flowing water. #Canaltown #WayneTomorrow #AsWeDreamByTheFire
