Canter Hill Farm Cleanup (4/29 and 4/30) We're grateful for the generous offers of help as we seek to clean up after our barn fire and build short term housing for animals, feed & hay. We're seeking help this coming weekend (Saturday and Sunday) for however long you can come, anytime within the cleanup time windows. Saturday (4/29): 2 pm to 6 pm... Sunday (4/30): 10 am to 4 pm Please wear boots and bring gloves. We will provide water and masks (for anyone working in the barn, the ash can be bothersome. We will have several areas for help - barn debris cleanup, feed movement (to a temporary shelter), breaking down an old shed to make room for a new one, breaking down old fencing, etc. If possible, please let us know IF you can come, what day and approximately the time range, because we are trying to figure out how many hands to be prepared for and how much food to have :) Due to the nature of the cleanup, it's not a good environment for young kids (we're sending ours for playdates), but anyone you deem old enough to help (teenagers +) and not get bored is much appreciated! Thank you!!! Wayne & Jeannette

For friends and followers of Canter Hill Farm, many of you know that yesterday our barn caught fire and burned to the ground. We lost a number of both meat and layer chicks, but the vast majority of our animals and our family, house and family pets were unscathed. We had five volunteer fire departments come out and battle a tremendous blaze, take down smoldering trees and chase our runaway ostrich (that was East Whiteland police department!) Thank you to our dear frien...ds Mike Comasky and Kyle from Whiskey Hollow Farm for being willing to brave the ostrich with Wayne. Were touched by the emails, texts and visits of friends and neighbors extending their care and offers to help. We’ll gratefully accept help likely in the form of a very un-glamorous debris clean up party once we get our hands around the immediate needs of relocating some of our critters to other spots on the farm. On a lighter note, I feel compelled to share the three best quotes surrounding this whole experience: 1. That is the single biggest chicken I’ve ever seen (no kidding, direct quote from an onlooker at the park in Exton where the ostrich hung out before being tackled by Wayne) 2. I didn’t know we had wild ostriches in Exton! (didn’t you know, they’re indigenous to Chester County?) and, my favorite, quoted by Sarah from Whiskey Hollow Farm: 3. Wayne, next time you decide to go running through the city, don’t wear your shorty-shorts and muck boots. If there’s one thing that farming has taught us, it’s that God’s in control, and you can’t change what’s already happened, so you pick up, keep going and try to find a glimmer of humor and encouragement they’re always there. http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com//Wild-Ostrich-Chase-Barn-Fi

There's something so precious about a mommy chicken shepherding her little chicks around the farm. Every morning, they pass by our back door as they make their morning rounds. Somehow, all 10 little chicks always manage to keep up - or mommy lets us know!
