Carpenters Union History 30.10.2020

Raymond Detweiler joined Local 1073 in Philadelphia on September 8, 1962 at the age of 30. He spent the next 28 years working all facets of the Trade. He worked on Residential, Concrete, Highway jobs, even spent time working in a wood shop at one of the Department stores in Philadelphia. He retired at the age 58 after suffering an injury working on a construction site. I didn't know Raymond but recently his family came to the Museum and donated his tools and tool box. Ther...e are no rare tools in this box. Just common tools that are worn out and rusted. You could find most of these tools at any flea market. But these tools tell a story of a carpenter that worked hard his entire life. When he purchased a table he made sure it was made union and had a union stamp. He taught his nieces and nephews the benefits of being in a Union. He retired and was able to live a comfortable life with his pension until he pasted away at the age of 87 Years old in late August 2019. There have been millions of lives enriched by the carpenters Union since it was founded in 1881. The tool box now on display at the Museums tells just one. #EASCARPENTERS #UNIONPRIDE #CARPENTERSUNION #UNITEDBROTHERHOODOFCARPENTERS
