A note from Mason Vollmer: Community Gardening grows in mysterious ways. An unanticipated aspect to the pandemic this year has been people rediscovering gardening- catching up on old projects and starting new ones. ... A project of mine was finally pulling the plug on a small horticultural enterprise I had started back in 2014 with the idea of developing a traveling display of container plants for senior homes and schools with educational, therapeutic, and vocational outcomes in mind a traveling Johnny Appleseed as it were. Along with personal health fears cast by the cloud that is the pandemic, changes with employment, medical coverage, income security, and so on, we need to sell our home, find better work and income strategies. In short Change. Yet every cloud has a silver lining. One of these has been finding the good people at the Coatesville Community Garden in association with Trinity Episcopal Church and the Chester County Food Bank where I was able to donate a fig tree, 15 apple trees and 30 berry bushes. It feels good to know that plants I no longer can care for have found a new home, even as we search for ours. The garden itself is a metaphor for community-where we find health and strength in diversity and shared effort. A passion of mine is sharing good garden tips with fellow gardeners including the fact that some fruits are easier to grow and other scientifically proven natural strategies for better environmental health. But I’ll save those stories for another time as I’m planning on transforming my outreach as a horticultural educator through a future blog and other social media channels. We are thrilled that Mason Vollmer, the owner of Environmentally Friendly Gardening, a horticultural consulting enterprise has donated various fruit trees and berries to the garden. Thank you, Mason! The garden community is greatly enriched by his generosity.
The garden had some great volunteers on Friday, May 1 - U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan and Sue. Thank you both for working in the garden. Also, great thanks to Terry Scholl from the Chester County Food Bank for all she does in the garden (she is in the forefront on picture 2). The garden is growing!

Many thanks to Terry Scholl, Raina and the volunteers they gathered and other staff at the Chester County Food Bank for all of their invaluable assistance!
The Chester County Food Bank hosted their annual Community Garden Fall Harvest Celebration at our Coatesville garden this year. They were wonderful hosts and we had a good turnout. Paul Cox took on the mowing of the garden as a Volunteer for which we are so grateful !
