This morning, I went to a local hardware store to pick up some necessities. I went early, hoping to get in and get out before the store got crowded; as it turne...d out, I got there about five minutes before they opened. As I was waiting in line with a bunch of other people for the store to open, the guy behind me, who had seen the Navy sticker on the back of my Jeep, thanked me for my service. Happens every year, especially around the patriotic holidays. Normally I just nod, mumble something along the lines of it was my privilege and move on. I don’t feel like I need any thanks, and it’s just kind of awkward. This time, though, I couldn’t just move on. I was stuck with this guy. Standing three feet away from me. Wearing his mask under his chin. It took every ounce of restraint I have not to go off on this guy, and here’s why. In five months, coronavirus has killed more Americans than the Vietnam War and the Korean War combined. If the trends of the last few weeks continue, by mid-June it will have killed more Americans than every war, peacekeeping operation, raid, and other military action we’ve taken since 1950 PLUS the 9/11 attacks. What that means is that my children, my parents, and the people I love are in more danger from the stupidity and selfishness of Americans who want to assert their right by not following public health advice than they have ever been from Al Qaeda and ISIS. If you want to prove you’re not afraid of coronavirus, that’s fine. You can go down to your basement and French kiss a plague rat for all I care. But when you go out in public, gather with large crowds of other people, don’t maintain social distancing protocols, don’t wear a mask, and don’t wash your hands, you’re endangering people I love. Like my 80 year old neighbor, who might shop in the same grocery store you do. Or the 19 year old college student from my church who is working at Walmart to pay her way through school and has to deal with customers who are too selfish or too lazy or too ignorant to wear a mask to protect her. Like my parents, who are in their 70s and both have health conditions that put them in vulnerable populations. Like my wife, and my daughters. And don't give me this "they can just stay home" crap. They need to eat, which means somebody has to buy groceries. Possibly from the same store you're spraying your germs all over. And if you think I served in uniform, missed holidays and anniversaries and birthdays with my family, to protect your supposed right to be a selfish jackass, you’ve got another thing coming. If you want to thank me for my service, then protect the ones I love the way I protected the ones you love. Wear a mask. Stay home as much as possible. Wash your hands. Maintain social distance. Listen to the scientists, the medical professionals, the epidemiologists, and the CDC on what are safe and effective ways to flatten the curve, not the tinfoil hat whackadoodles on YouTube and social media who can’t even spell pandemic. I don’t care if you think masks don’t work; the experts say they do. I don’t care how much courage you think you have or how much faith you claim to have; it’s not about you. It’s about the people you come in contact with. People I love. And if you’re not willing to do these simple things to protect the people I love and care about, then you can take your thanks for my service and stick it in your ear, or any other location of your choice.
