Did you know that Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? The Celts, who lived over 2,000 years ago, would wear costumes and light bonfires to ward off ghosts. They believed that on All Hallow's Eve, or the night before All Saints' Day, the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, and on the night of October 31st, ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In the 1840's, Irish immigrants fleeing the Potato Famine brought several Halloween tradit...ions to America, including the jack-o-lantern (which they carved out of turnips!). Americans began to dress in costumes and ask for treats from their neighbors (which at the time also included money!). Between 1920 and 1950, trick-or-treating became even more popular as it was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share in the spooky celebration. Happy Halloween from the Craven Hall Historical Society! Stay safe and be scary! #buckscounty #historicbuckscounty #localhistory #halloween #warminster
Has the pandemic forced you to work on home renovation projects? Have you painted any walls this summer? In Colonial America, they couldn't stop at their nearest Lowes or Home Depot to pick up a can, so how did they make, and use, paint 200+ years ago? Check out our latest blog article, Painting Your Home in 18th Century America, to learn more. We even included a paint recipe for you to try! #buckscounty #localhistory #Warminster #historichomes... https://medium.com//colonial-life-how-our-ancestors-lived-
