We are always honored when colleagues with nutrition and dietary background in our area refer clients to us as a preferred source of local, nourishing food. As part of our New Year’s Resolutions program, we reached out to some respected voices in our community when it comes to nutrition and healthy eating habits. One of those voices is Whitney George from Ampersand Integrative Wellness. Whitney holds a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridg...eport, CT., is a Certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultant and is a former Functional Nutrition Resident of Dr. Kara Fitzgerald. Recently, we caught up with Whitney to hear what she’s saying to her clients as they begin the New Year and here is what she had to say. Here are some tips to make lasting changes to start the New Year Be A Conscious Consumer: Organic and sustainable growing practices, including pasture-raising animals, help reduce the use of disease-causing synthetic chemicals and help sequester carbon, reducing greenhouse gases and allowing the earth to regenerate healthy soil. Be Adventurous. Try New Foods. Add grass-fed organic organ meats, bone marrow and bone broths, and whole-animal cooking to your healthy, nutrient-dense food regimen. Most People Don’t Eat Enough Vegetables. Aim for 6-8 cups of mostly non-starchy vegetables per day for optimal health Eat The Colors of the Rainbow! Incorporate reds, blues, purples, yellows, oranges, greens, whites, and tans, from the plant kingdom into your daily choice of veggies and fruits Finally, Incorporate Healthy Fats, Protein, and Fiber(from mostly non-starchy veggies) at Every Meal and Snack. Your plate should be holding about 1/2 to 3/4 vegetables, close to 1/4 protein like grass-fed beef for example and 1/8 healthy fat. These tips help clients focus on what to add in their diets, instead of dwelling on things they should remove. *Disclaimer-These tips are general advice.
