REFUNDS TO BE LESS THAN THEY WERE IN PRIOR YEARS You probably noticed that in 2018, your paycheck was higher than it was in previous years. That is because the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 was designed to give you more money throughout the year instead of receiving a large tax refund at the end of the year. ESTIMATED TAX PENALTIES HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED FOR MOST TAXPAYERS... Due to the implementation of the TCJA, estimated tax penalties have been eliminated for a majority of taxpayers. In the past, you were required to pay, either through withholding or estimated tax payments 100% of what your liability was the year before (110% of your liability if your adjusted gross income ((AGI)) was more than $150,000). However, the IRS has issued guidance that will eliminate these penalties for those that have paid at least 85% of what their liability was in 2017.
