Discover What Happens When Your Child Starts to Develop Self-Confidence After nearly twenty years of working with children I can say that I believe the most valuable virtue a kid can have is CONFIDENCE. Now, its not on Aristotle's list of Twelve Virtues but its certainly mixed in there among them.... It's not important WHY you know I believe that but more important you understand what happens when your child's confidence SKYROCKETS. Here is a list of five things that happen when that occurs. 1. Decisiveness. When your child has confidence in their ability they become incredibly decisive in their decisions. No more hemming and hawing when it comes time to decide what to wear, eat or do. Imagine your life. 2. Ability to Make Friends. Not only make friends but make the RIGHT ONES. Talking to your peers at a young age is tough but when your child has a level of confidence that is beyond average they are able to pick and choose who they hang around with. More importantly, they are able to remove "friends" that aren't good for them. 3. Exploration. This can be new foods, new experiences, sports and education. When your kids are confident they are willing to try new things because they don't fear what other people think about them. They don't fear "looking silly" if it doesn't work out and they will find something in the process that will fulfill them. 4. Strength to Stand Up For Themselves and Others. The number one reason a bully is persistent towards one target is because of that child's inability to "stand up" to the bully. Additionally, the reason people don't stand up for others is because they're afraid of what might happen if they do. When your child is confident in both themselves and their ability to stand strong in the face of a bully they essentially become "Bully Proof" for themselves and others. 5. Happiness. Listen, this is the "Chase". It's what we all search for and when your child is confident they make good decisions, surround themselves with positive and trustworthy friends, spend their time on constructive things that fulfill them and that all leads to, you guessed it, HAPPINESS. So, how the heck does this happen? How can you, as a parent, help your child's confidence skyrocket? I have a formula that I truly believe. Confidence < Competence < Practice Practice what? Well, I'm a martial artist, and I'm biased, but I really do believe that every child can benefit from training some form of martial art. There isn't another activity that can teach your child as much as the martial arts does. They will be exposed to pressure in sparring, fear when breaking boards and persistence when learning self-defense all in a controlled and safe environment that pushes them to be their best. They practice. They reach a level of competence at something. They become CONFIDENT! So, what next? COMMENT Below or CALL --> 610-363-7575 Master Lonnie Beck

5 Things Everyone must know for self defense Know the difference between a hard target and a soft target. Make yourself a hard target People that prey on other people are experts at threat mitigation. They will make decisions that keep them upright, profitable, and out of jail. The harder you are to attack or prey upon the safer you will generally be.... Understand Situational Awareness Pay. Attention. Things are happening all around you, never let yourself get surprised. Practice having broader attentiveness when in public. Precursors for Attack Our body language betrays our thoughts. Knowing that an attack is coming keeps you from getting caught off guard. Eye contact, lack of eye contact, nervousness, non-contextually appropriate smiling, verbal contact and repeated verbal contact can all be indicators of pending attack The law and your ethics You need to know two things above and beyond all else. How far will you go and how far can you go. You need to understand the difference between self-defense and assault or murder. You also need to know what and how far you are willing to go. Learning self-defense is a process not a project. Much like cleaning your garage or basement, spending a day learning self-defense and then letting it go isn’t going to do much for you. Instead a routine training, just like routine cleanliness will provide so much more.

How Martial Arts Training Helps You Become a Better Leader If you're reading this, you probably already know that martial arts training offers benefits beyond getting you in shape and teaching you self-defense. Here are 3 ways martial arts training helps you demonstrate leadership in both your personal and professional life: 1. Martial Arts Teaches you to prepare mentally before you enter any situation and especially a potentially negative one.... Martial Arts training (whether it's Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai) is based on three pillars: Awareness, Preparation, and Prevention. As a beginner, you'll have to willingly do these three things, but as you become advanced they start to become automatic. The person that is aware, prepared and has taken necessary steps to mitigate risk can take control of the situation and make a positive impact. 2. Martial Arts teaches you to accept that you are going to be challenged and face adversity. At the crux of martial arts training is the reality that someone else intends to do you physical harm. This can be to a varying degree, but the reality is still there. The martial arts will push you to your mental and physical limits. You'll discover how to solve problems under high levels of stress. This enables you to stay calm and objective keeping you effective on the problem at hand. 3. Martial Arts help people see your authenticity and confidence. Folks that have been in the martial arts a long time are some of the kindest and most genuine people I know. They're also some of the "baddest" people I know. Like so many things, when people start to learn martial arts they too are victim to the Dunning-Kruger effect. Once you know a little, you think you know a lot. But, as you start to learn more, you realize how little you actually know. Martial arts training has a unique way of teaching this principle. The martial arts mats are a great equalizer. They don't just develop a person, they also reveal a person to themselves. You gain a greater sense of humility and really "knowing what you know". Sincerely, Somnath Sikdar President, Dragon Gym

8 Tips to help stay cool, calm, and collected: Emotions like frustration and anger can get the best of all of us. When dealing with children, family members, friends, or even co-workers we'll be put in situations that don't meet our expectations and at times these negative emotions will find their way in. We owe it to ourselves and others to avoid letting these emotions steer our behavior. Staying cool, calm, and collected will help optimize these relationships as well as ...result in better outcomes for ourselves. Here are some strategies that can help de-escalate your emotional state: Consider the negative consequences of expressing anger by practicing to be an objective bystander in all situations. Take a pause and temporarily remove yourself from the situation. Reflect on what's more important: "the thing" or winning the argument about "the thing" and let others be wrong. Consider being right, or being happy. Ask what is the root cause of your anger: physical harm? disappointment? morality? Something else? Ask yourself if there a solution that is advanced by your anger. Understand that you will always only have some of the data. What additional information could assuage your anger? Learn and practice relaxation techniques like breathing, meditation, and martial arts.

Dear Parent, "Screens" and their use have become pretty ubiquitous among both kids and adults. With virtual schooling, it has become possible to completely restrict/eliminate our kids' use of screens, mobile devices, and other tech. We were a very low-screen family at home. Phones stay in the mudroom, laptops stay closed and the TV stays off until the kids are in bed. ... But, when they go to friends' houses they might watch TV. And now, with remote learning, the kids are on screens 6-8 hours a day. Plus, they'll have additional assignments for homework! It's become unavoidable. However, here are some critical downsides of "screen-time" to consider: (And, by the way, these apply to adults) Increased screen time correlates with childhood and adolescent obesity Screen time too close to bedtime inhibits both quality and quantity of sleep (and lack of sleep can lead to a host of other problems) Too much screen time can be a barrier to learning. This is twofold. Screens and devices can provide an easy distraction from required school work and reading. Plus, it has been shown that both retention and comprehension is greater in "analog". Physical books and handwritten notes are far superior. When kids are interacting with a screen instead of engaging in real relationships they never develop effective social and communication skills. Furthermore, when kids get on social media too soon it can lead to aggression, anxiety, depression, and perhaps even substance abuse and other risky activities. They'll be broke. Huh? I don't mean the cost of the devices themselves. Rather, these devices are designed to make it easy to spend money...think amazon 1-click shopping. It's best not to learn the habit of easy spending. Here are some screen-free activity ideas:
