On December 8th, 2019, the Drexel University Concert Band performed "Shenandoah" by Frank Ticheli as part of its fall concert program, "Moving Westward." Tuba player Dora McCafferty reminisces, "Though we are fortunately able to continue meeting virtually, it's concerts like this that have us itching to go back to the stage." Since the switch to remote instruction, the students of Chamber Winds are rehearsing in real time using an application called SoundJack. Dr. Eve Friedman, director of the ensemble, shares, The learning curve is steep, but we have found it to be worth the effort! Not only are we learning about sound and its intersection with technology, we are actually able to rehearse together. On the left side of the screenshot, you can see that we are watching each other on Zoom, but everyone is muted there. Our audio is coming through SoundJack, which has much lower latency than Zoom. The left-hand side of the SoundJack screen shows all the settings we've become familiar with. Thank you, Dr. Friedman, for sharing your rehearsal process with us! Andrea Eleazar ’23, public health major and concertmaster of the Drexel University Symphony Orchestra, shared with us this photo of her practicing at home and wrote to us about her experience. She described, DUSO looks quite different now as we don’t rehearse together in real time we rehearse with a metronome-like track in our headphones to prepare for a recorded video project, our first ‘performance’ together since our March concert. As someone who was highly active in yo...uth orchestras and other musical activities before college, DUSO allows me to continue pursuing my passion for classical music at a high level without overly competitive pressure, alongside my academic/professional goals. I’m glad to be part of such a diverse, talented, and resilient group who focuses on delivering their best artistry in any circumstance!" Continue to improve your piano skills with our remote piano classes this Fall! Our faculty have successfully transitioned their instruction to a remote model and students have been learning a lot. One of our students said, 'I was able to rediscover my love for music through this class and in the future, I will definitely find more ways to incorporate playing in my daily life.' If you are in need of a keyboard, our faculty recommends full size keys with touch sensitivity. There are plenty of affordable options available for purchase online that you will have for a lifetime.
