Hope you are all healthy and staying safe. Your health is very important to me so I wanted to send a few tips to get us through this crisis. And we will get through it together. I know it is so easy to venture off of your healthy eating plan and grab the sweets and processed carbohydrates, like chips, crackers and other packaged goods. Let’s face it; they help us feel better, but only temporarily. And then it becomes difficult to stop and then the pounds start to creep up. I...t is much easier to prevent weight gain than it is to lose the weight once we gain it. If you want to treat yourself, have only one treat a day and stick to portions sizes: less than 140 calories of a carbohydrate. One small piece of dark chocolate can ward off cravings. Try to get in the exercise. If it is sunny, get out of the house. Take walks, work in the yard or play with the children and your pets. This definitely helps with our mental state, as well, and will also help steer us away from the sweets. If it is dreary outside, keep moving at home. There are lots of videos from yoga, walking and high intensity. Choose what is comfortable for you. Remember some movement is better than none.Turn off the TV once in a while and listen to music. Dig out some of your old CD's. Dance with anyone in your household, including the cat/s or dog/s to improve mood. Experiment with some recipes you may have been wanting to try. And, of course, add extra vegetables, which can help boost your immune system. Maybe you can revisit a hobby that you haven't recently had time to enjoy. Of course, there is always house cleaning and organizing. So now is a good time to tackle some of the projects we have been putting off because we can never find the time. Take your vitamins. A good multi-vit and Vitamin D would be my first recommendations. You could also add Vitamin C and a B-complex. The B’s can help ward off mild depression. And last, but certainly not least, be sure to get good sleep. The average adult should get between 7-9 hours of solid sleep a night. Poor sleep habits can lead to over eating as our body is stressed and then releases a hunger producing hormone, cortisol. This will be over soon and things will go back to normal. So think about where you want to be when that happens. During these unprecedented times and in accordance with the President, CDC and health officials, the northeast racquet club will be closed from Monday, March 17th through Friday, March 27th in an effort to halt the spread of COVID-19. Our practice at the Racquet Club will be closed for in-office nutrition consultations. However, most insurance plans are covering for telehealth nutrition counseling. At this time Independence Blue Cross, Aetna and Cigna will cover your virtual... telehealth appointment with our registered dietitians by telephone, Skype and facetime. In the meantime, follow CDC guidelines for handwashing and continue a healthy diet. Lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats (nuts, avocado, olive oil) will help to boost your immune system. If you are having trouble finding fresh foods, frozen is an excellent option and may actually have more nutrients than fresh. If your supermarket shelves are empty, you can order from Amazon, Peapod (Giant) Walmart, Whole Foods and other chains. Also, keep up with your current exercise regime. The gym is not necessary. Get out in the fresh air and sunshine. Take a walk or ride a bike. Soak up some Vitamin D, which is very protective against many diseases.
