This past week our staff gave out eggs, sugar and tea to Daycare families for them to prepare breakfast at home for their children. Even this simple staple protein is financially out of reach for many families at Embracing Hope. Eggs for our family in the US cost about $1.80 for a dozen - so the cost each is 15 cents. Not bad for a source of protein. We can feed our whole family eggs in the morning and not feel the pinch. Now, consider the price of eggs for families we serv...e in Kore'. The price of 1 egg is 7 ETB or 18 cents USD per egg. Yes, you read that right, the price of eggs in Ethiopia is more expensive than in most parts of the US. Then the real rub comes into the picture. Within the city I live in, the median income is about $4,500 per month. Within EH families the median income is closer to 2,000 ETB ($50 USD) per month. If you ever wonder why it is the families struggle just to make ends meet and why Moms might end up selling themselves or begging on the street corner to feed their families, just think for a moment about that simple egg you ate for breakfast this morning for starters and then build on that layer after layer of other compounding factors. Please pray for the COVID situation in Ethiopia. This was the news from the US Embassy this morning: "Community transmission of the coronavirus in Ethiopia is widespread and accelerating rapidly. Public and private hospitals in Addis Ababa are reporting that their COVID bedspace is full. Life-saving oxygen and medical supplies are difficult to secure. An increase in new cases of 66% percent and an increase in the percent positive by 43% percent were observed over this two-week period." Please keep the families of Kore' as well as all throughout Ethiopia in prayer.

Flexibility is key. Because of a spike in COVID numbers, we have had to delay reopening the Daycare again. However, all daycare families received extra breakfast supports for home and stipends to help pay for someone to watch their children until we can reopen. 19 New families were just added who are in need of sponsorship with children ranging from 6 months to almost 5 years old. These families are in a very difficult place because of COVID and the loss of work. Some are widows, others were abandoned by their husbands and others are two parent homes that are living on the edge.
