A provocative article from Slate discusses grey vs green approaches to curbing sewer overflows and the pollution they cause, specifically focusing on Chicago’s Deep Tunnel, which has yielded mixed results. By contrast Philadelphia’s bold green infrastructure initiative is mentioned as a possible new model for cities. Chicago sought to build the world’s largest sewer to stop sewage overflows, Philadelphia is trying to transform itself into a sponge with park space, street tre...es, and permeable pavement. The city is spending $2.4 billion to implement the nation’s largest green infrastructure plan, an experiment that positions it as the anti-Chicago. Though winter is nearing, the heat of our planet is still rising. As noted in this article from Yale 360, sustainable design can help cities keep temps in check, lessening the impact of climate change and heat island effect. It doesn’t all need to be green - smart, properly shaded architecture can help too.

A flourishing rain garden at Di Silvestro playground in south Philly, spotted yesterday while doing residential stormwater consultations. The site was transformed from concrete to a green space and a bit more. See how this green space helps to facilitate the health and well-being of a dense urban area here: https://naturephl.org/about

Biophilic design isn’t new. Architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan and even Le Corbusier, the father of modern design and a concrete building style akin to Brutalism, included greenery in their works. But it is now the essential mode of our time. www.wsj.com//nurturing-nature-with-architecture-11559843286
