Daily Reflection for Friday, January 1, 2021 "New Life in a New Year" Pastor Joe DiPaolo Psalm 90:1-12: 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn people back to dust, saying, Return to dust, you mortals. 4 A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.5 Yet you sweep peop...Continue reading

Daily Reflection for Thursday, December 31, 2020 "Looking Closely at Jesus" Rev. Kent Kroehler Scripture: Luke 2:25-32: Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in... the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ One of my favorite parts of the Christmas story happens after Christmas day. It is when Mary and Joseph take the baby Jesus to the Temple for the Jewish rite of purification. There was an old man there named Simeon. God told Simeon that he would get to see the Messiah before he died. One day in Jerusalem, the Spirit inspired Simeon to go up to the Temple. He saw the baby Jesus with Joseph and Mary, and he knew he just KNEW! who this boy was. He stepped up to Mary and Joseph, gained their confidence, took the baby into his arms, and blessed God. All along the way, God had provided confirming people for Joseph and Mary. Here, God used an old man. God blessed Simeon with a sense of this bay’s role, and then God made Simeon a blessing to Joseph and Mary. Simeon got a huge new confidence of faith, and he was ready for anything even his death. Today, look very closely at Jesus. Can you see more than a baby? Can you see God bringing light to people like us who have a hard time seeing? Can you see God bringing forgiveness to people like us who do things our own way? Can you see God bringing peace to people like us who prefer to live in turmoil? Can you see God bringing wonder to people like us who get depressed and fearful about the future (and the present too)? As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas season, let us join in Simeon’s prayer: At last, Lord, you can dismiss your servant in peace, as you promised! For with my own eyes I have seen your salvation which you have made ready for every people a light to show truth to the gentiles and bring glory to your people Israel! Today Bill Henry and I (Laura Meisl) had fun climbing the scaffold that encompasses our bell tower. We were able to see the progress that Witmer Masonary is making and all the improvements. For the first time, I saw up close our carillon speakers and they were much bigger than expected. We got a wonderful 360 view of Lancaster City! It was amazing! #firstchurchlanc #dukeandwalnut #loveoneanother #lancastercitypa
