EPA Region 3 Administrator Cosmo Servidio and WV Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Austin Caperton met today at the WV DEP headquarters building to announce attainment of statewide national ambient air quality standards and EPA funding to support water quality projects. EPA announced that the area of Marshall County, West Virginia, attained the 2010 federal sulfur dioxide national ambient air quality standard (NAAQS) under the Clean Air Act. Attaining the NAAQ...S means cleaner air, improved health outcomes, and greater economic opportunities for cities and communities across the country. EPA also announced two water related grants: $24.7 million to West Virginia for water quality improvement projects to address wastewater treatment and stormwater runoff and $11 million for drinking water improvement projects throughout the state. These water improvement grants will be supplemented with nearly $4.9 million in state matching funds for wastewater projects and $2.8 million in state matching funds for drinking water projects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association (PACA) toured the Frank Bryan Concrete Factory, Pittsburgh, attended a roundtable and signed a four-year, first-of-its-kind Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand joint activities supporting the agencies’ shared goal of environmental stewardship, Oct. 7. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, EPA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Cosmo Servidio were joined by State Senator Came...ra Bartolotta (PA-46), State Representative Joshua Kail (PA-15), Allegheny Count At Large Council Representative Samuel DeMarco, PACA President and CEO Peter Vlahos, and factory owner Frank Bryan. The roundtable focused on the success of the Smart Sectors program, a voluntary partnership program launched in 2017 that improves collaboration with regulated stakeholders. On its three-year anniversary, the Smart Sectors Program provides a platform to collaborate with regulated sectors and develop sensible approaches that better protect the environment and public health.
