It’s Safe Toys & Gifts Month What to consider about: Toy Guns, Crossbows, and Nerf Darts... Nerf darts are soft, but that doesn't mean they're safe. Eye injuries from toy darts can cause serious pain and blurred vision. A study supports what the American Academy of Ophthalmology has said many times: Projectile toys are not safe. Off-brand replacement darts can be even harder than the Nerf brand, causing even more damage. What's so dangerous about Nerf guns? Dart guns can cause serious eye injuries. Eye scrapes, bleeding, cataracts, increased eye pressure and permanent vision loss are all possible. The Academy stands by its guidance about projectile toys: They are unsafe and you should think about buying something else. If you do buy them for your children, supervise them while they play. Always follow manufacturer warnings and age guidelines. According to the United States' Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2019 report, emergency rooms in the U.S. treated more than a quarter million toy-related injuries in 2018. Make sure you choose safe toys for your kids' health and your own peace of mind. What is Diabetic Retinopathy Diabetic Retinopathy occurs when the tiny blood vessels inside the retina at the back of the eyes are damaged as a result of diabetes. This can seriously affect vision and left untreated, often causes blindness. Currently, about 1 in 3 U.S. adults with diabetes age 40 and older have diabetic retinopathy. It is one of the leading causes of new cases of legal blindness in the country. You can help to prevent it by understanding it, mana...ging your diabetes, and getting regular eye exams. Common symptoms: blurry vision, distorted vision, floaters or strings of floaters, blind or dark areas in your field of vision. The best solution? PREVENTION! Control Your Blood Sugar- take your meds as directed, check your blood sugar several times a day, ask your doc about a hemoglobin A1C test Stop Smoking (or don’t start!)- smoking damages blood vessels, compounding the damage done by the blood sugar Exercise- 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week should be the goal for people with diabetes. 30 minutes, 5 days a week! Try not to go more than two days between exercising. Otherwise, the glucose-metabolizing effects of physical exercise will wear off. Eat Healthy- try to avoid junk and fast food and try to eat more fruits and vegetables, especially dark leafy greens. One study found that a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids could be protective against the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy and macular edema. Visit Your Eye Doctor- since you may not notice any symptoms before you start to lose vision, make sure to get an eye exam AT LEAST once a year. #diabetesawarenessmonth #diabeticretinopathy #lasereyesurgery #eriepa #lasereyesurgeryoferie #diabeticeyedisease #proactive #eyehealth

I had a severe astigmatism. I have been wearing glasses for 42 years. I sat up after surgery and could see without glasses for the first time in my memory. The staff is so well informed and caring. I was told I may need reading glasses but I am finding my vision to be better than expected. I can see clearly...even when reading. I couldn't be more thankful. -T.P. Cucumber slices for the eyes 5 ways they can help: Controls Puffiness: Cucumber has ascorbic and caffeic acid, which helps bring down the water retention rate, diminishing the swelling and puffiness around the eyes. Cut cucumber slices and refrigerate it for a while. It will help you relax and hydrate your eyes. Fights Cellulite: Cucumber juice contains phytochemicals that aid in the production of collagen. Collagen is a fiber like protein responsible for skin elastici...ty and removes cellulite. Fights Cellulite: The presence of antioxidants and silica in cucumber can help slow down dark circles. Though it is not a permanent solution to dark circles, it helps in lightening the skin around the eyes. The skin around our eyes is often discoloured. Cucumber helps in treating this and brings back the lost beauty on our faces. Reduces Eye Wrinkles: Cucumber plays the role of a natural moisturizer. The skin around the eyes is the thinnest in our body. Placing cucumber slices on the eyes helps in hydrating your eyes and the skin around them. This in turn helps in reducing lines and wrinkles. Cucumber can indeed be called an eye moisturizer. Reduces Under Eye Bags: Cucumber also helps in toning down under eye bags. Take some cold cucumber and grind it to make a paste. Add either lavender oil or chamomile oil to it along with some honey. Blend it well in order to make a fine paste. Apply it under your eyes using your fingers lightly. Leave this for 10-15 minutes and wipe it later with a damp cloth. Raccoons and night vision Raccoons have excellent night vision. The reflective layer in the lens of the eye that makes them seem to glow in the dark also magnifies images of nearby objects. Raccoon vision is binocular giving them excellent depth perception, and the ability to distinguish colors.... They do not have good distance vision however, so they will usually avoid open spaces, especially during the day when the reflection of light makes distant vision less reliable. #nightvision #raccoons #eyesight #animals #nocturnal #visionfacts #animalvision #binocularvision #lasereyesurgeryoferie #trashpandas #neighborhoodcritters
