Jack LeGoff gave us a lecture one time---this was maybe 45 years ago---about what was meant by the phrase "a straight horse." Jack explained that the rib cage s...tructure of a horse, unlike that, say, of a cat, was rather rigid, and did not bend readily, but that a horse could be worked carefully in such a way as to free up the hind limbs and shoulders and fore limbs so that they developed a wider range of motion laterally. He went on to explain that a "straight" horse was a horse whose right front and hind legs were both on one track, and whose left front and hind legs were both on a parallel path, and that this was as true on a curve as on a straight line. "Turn a horse, in dressage, like a railroad train," he said. In other words, by increasing lateral flexibility---not by force, but by gradually increasing the range of motion---the horse becomes more able to be ridden straight. So leg yielding, shoulder in, renvers, travers, are part of the path toward straightness, which, according to the dressage training scale in popular usage, is one of the last things to be expected of a horse. Can’t stop, addicted to Fantastico I’m so proud of this boy, he is really understanding the goal, thinking about the jumps, and how to use his body properly The next days he will have a well deserved rest, since I’m going on a trip with some friends!
