Congratulations! You have a new feline companion. And now you find yourself standing in the kitty litter aisle of your local pet supply store faced with myriad choices. So what litter should you pick for your pick of the litter?... If your new cat is a kitten, experts recommend using non-clumping clay litter. The reasons: Clay litter has larger particles, making it harder for a kitten to ingest. It also is less likely to stick to little kitten paws, where it will be tracked around the house and can find its way into kitty‘s system when they clean themselves. Also good for kittens is litter made from recycled newspaper. Older cats with respiratory problems, or cats recovering from surgery, also should be provided this type of litter in their boxes. For older cats, litter that clumps traps more odor, and makes litter box scooping an easier task. Clumping litter comes in a variety of fragrances, depending upon the manufacturer, although studies have shown cats prefer unscented litter. Any litter that has an addition of charcoal or baking soda will absorb more odor. And litters marked low-tracking are just that: Kitty will be less likely to leave a trail from their box to the window (or wherever they like to hang out). No matter what litter you decide upon for your cat, it is important to keep their litter box scooped out and clean to encourage its use. They like being in a space in which they can’t be snuck up upon, and where they can see, but not be seen (for the most part). Boxes give cats the confined, enclosed spaces they covet for hiding and hunting, and also help them feel cozy and warm. The cardboard squares act as a safe space, and in some cases, also as something to scratch or bite, two favorite cat activities.
