Fishtown Neighbors Association 06.06.2021

It's been a tough year for our students, and FNA has been looking for a way to help. Just this week, we announced the first of what we hope will be many annual scholarship fundraisers in partnership with the Penn Treaty School. Together, we are looking to raise $5,000 to support an exceptional high school senior graduating from Penn Treaty School and heading into an accredited post-secondary education institution (4-year, 2-year, community college, trade school, or other accr...edited training/apprenticeship programs). We are really excited about this opportunity to support our local students, specifically those that could use the help. This year's scholarship is a pilot program and we would love to look back in a few months and say that there is room to grow and support more students in the 2021/22 school year, so pitch in if you can! Donate here: https://fishtown.nationbuilder.com/penn_treaty_scholarship_ For students and families looking to apply, see the full eligibility and application requirements here: https://www.fishtown.org/scholarship.html

Holy Name of Jesus Church, with its lovely stone walls, original slate roof, stone steps, courtyard garden and community kitchen, has been serving the Fishtown community for over 116 years. The building is now in need of immediate repair and are looking to the community for help. Please consider donating to this fundraiser.

We appreciate the shout-out for FNA’s mutual-aid program in this CBS3 story on Congress’s economic relief deal. While we’re not the U.S. Treasury, we do have $100 gift cards for groceries and essentials for neighbors in need, funded by Fishtown neighbors and the Penn Treaty Special Services District! Apply here: http://help.fishtown.org... In the meantime, community organizations like the Fishtown Neighbors Association have helped people stay afloat. FNA launched a mutual aid program at the beginning of the pandemic where neighbors can submit requests for needs, like grocery store gift cards. We’ve had about 800 requests at this point, between gift cards and cloth masks, and deliveries, Katherine Clayton, FNA’s events committee chair, said. The food insecurity kind of rose up and we’ve had a lot of people looking for food. https://philadelphia.cbslocal.com//coronavirus-covid19-re/

Fishtown's own Marge Wible aka Mrs. Claus is the subject of a great community member profile in The Star! At FNA we also want to recognize Marge for being a huge help doing outreach to neighbors about FNA's mutual-aid program this year, connecting neighbors for free volunteer services and gift cards. If you or someone you know could use some extra help this holiday season, FNA is distributing $100 gift cards to local grocery stores and pharmacies for essentials. Reach out or... sign up a neighbor via http://help.fishtown.org https://starnewsphilly.com/20//17/from-marge-to-mrs-claus/

Thank you to our amazing volunteers for tucking the trees in for winter! In a little over 2 hours you were able to mulch and care for more than 30 trees in the ...park including our beloved Historic Elm tree and the young and newly planted trees. The Rose Garden is looking so neat after being weeded and cleaned up. Near the playground, some larger trees are breathing easier with the removal of girdling roots and grass. We were so fortunate to have Damean Snyder and Matthew Dera volunteer on Sunday. They are local arborists who worked around the playground digging out and replanting 2 sunken trees and thoughtfully removing 2 dead trees, leaving no stump/tripping hazard insight. Thank you for your amazing work! A very special thank you to Jacelyn Blank and Nykia Perez Kibler from the Philly Tree People for sharing their expertise and tools and guiding us in caring for Penn Treaty Park's trees. Your love for trees inspires us all. http://www.phillytreepeople.org/ We thought we were closed up for the winter, but resounding interest has inspired us to add another Service Day in late January. More details coming soon... ***************************************** The Hook, a weekly newsletter for Fishtown, helped support this tree care event.
