#OnThisDate in 1813, a young, brash American #Naval officer arrives in #EriePA to assume command of the Lake Erie Squadron. Oliver Hazard Perry arrived "in Erie......making his trip from Buffalo in a sledge of ice". Upon arrival, he established a headquarters at Duncan's Hotel (at the corner of present-day Third and French Streets). For the eventual "Hero of Lake Erie", the welcome wasn't exactly a "warm" one. The ships were in desperate need for supplies and, due to the lack of settlement in the region, he would end up back on the proverbial road. Within 72-hours, Perry went to #Pittsburgh to begin the process of outfitting his ships. To learn more about Oliver Hazard Perry, the construction of the Lake Erie squadron, and so much more, visit our website at www.eriemaritimemuseum.org. @perrysvictorynps #PATrailsOfHistory #VisitErie
Today we welcome Mr. Gene Salecker, author of "Disaster on the Mississippi".
"I was sound asleep when this happened, waking up while flying through the air...whirling over and over", pined Charles Eldridge, 3rd TN Cavalry. He did not hea...r or feel the explosion, as he was sleeping aboard Sultana in an area known as the hurricane deck. Today at 2pm EST, we welcome Mr. Gene Salecker, author of "Disaster on the Mississippi". We still have space available. To register, click the link in the comments.
Join us on Facebook live tonight at 5:30pm EST for the lighting of the Christmas Tree Ship, @flagshipniagara. Like so many things this year we are unable to invite everyone to our annual tradition of Christmas Tree Ship but we can still share the official lighting of the ship for the holiday season. Following the live lightening of the ship, we will share a great video of the reading of the book Christmas Tree Ship by Jeanette Winter, presented by Connie Kerr Vogt, Administra...tor of South Hills Child Development Center, a proud sponsor of our annual event. This year's tree was donated by our friends at Arkwright's Tree & Wreath Farm in Cranesville, Pennsylvania. Grab your hot chocolate and join us @flagshipniagara for this holiday tradition.
