Freeman's is excited to present "I Have a Dream" by Charles White in our December 6 auction of American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists. The present work is a preparatory drawing for the eponymous lithograph, which White executed in 1976. While the subject and composition evoke traditional European religious imagery, the title itself refers to the famous speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered on August 28, 1963 in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. during what is now remembered as the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Freeman's is pleased to present The Melody Stilled by Cold by Norman Rockwell in our December 6 American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists auction. Norman Rockwell is arguably the most iconic painter associated with the Golden Age of Illustration, and will forever be celebrated for his uncanny and heartwarming depictions of a simpler, bygone America. As the artist states himself: "I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed. And perhaps, therefore, this is one function of the illustrator. He can show what has become so familiar that it is no longer noticed. The illustrator thus becomes a chronicler of his time." Learn more about the work here:

We’re excited to feature a collection of 121 canes across 50 lots in tomorrow’s auction Age of Exploration: Travel & Discovery Through the Centuries. This unique collection comes from award-winning independent film director Larry Clark. Featured: Lot 126 | A German silver-mounted maple violin cane, Late 19th century The tau-form handle unscrewing to compartment for bow, the silver mounts remove to open to violin.... Larry Clark (b. 1943) is an American photographer and independent film director best known for his 1995 cult film, Kids. His oeuvre has controversially focused on contemporary youth culture, particularly examining their participation in illicit activities and the detrimental effects of mainstream media. Clark’s collection of canes and walking sticks, presented here, is an eclectic assemblage of antique and collectible canes that range between decorative and utilitarian purposes. The majority of these canes are from the 19th and early 20th century and represent the degree of craftsmanship and artistry that can be found in the medium. Historically, canes were an important part of self-fashioning and served a variety of purposes: conveniently packaged equipment for professionals, pragmatic tools for walking and hiking, elegant markers of class and sophistication, and devices to conceal weaponry.
