The three pillars of sustainability
We’re excited to announce our keynote speaker for the November 13 Women+ in Green Breakfast! Leah Lizarondo, the CEO and co-founder of @412FoodRescue, will speak about her inspiration and story as to how she created the internationally recognized app/service that aims to fight hunger and promote sustainability by preventing perfectly good food from entering the waste stream and redirecting it to organizations that serve those who are food insecure. Founded in 2015, 412 Food R...escue is one of the fastest-growing food recovery organizations in the U.S. It has prevented over 11 million pounds of food from going to waste with a mobile app that mobilizes the world’s largest network of on-demand volunteer food recovery drivers currently over 9,000 drivers in Pittsburgh alone. The model helps people and the planet: more than 9 million meals have been distributed to people in need, and by using food that would otherwise go to waste, over 6 million pounds of CO2 emissions have been prevented. Leah’s work at 412 Food Rescue has been featured in national media including @NPR, @FastCompany, @FoodTank, @MarthaStewartLiving, Food & Wine, Bust Magazine and Civil Eats. In 2020, the Food Rescue Hero technology platform won Fast Company‘s World Changing Ideas award and was named a CES Innovation Honoree. In 2019, it won the Carnegie Science Award for Information Technology. Leah has won numerous awards for her work, including the 2019 We Empower UN SDG challenge, a global award for women social entrepreneurs. She was a recipient of a 2020 GIobal Leadership Award from Vital Voices, was named Pittsburgher of the Year by @PittsburghCityPaper in 2018, and was included in FoodTank‘s 17 Food Heroes to Inspire Us in 2017. Register for the November 13 breakfast at the link in our bio!

The term Global Village was coined in the 1960s by Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan and referred to the interconnectedness of the world due to advancing media technologies. But as citizens of the world, we are also connected by our common struggles and our common hope. We are beginning to understand this now more than ever. Climate change, systemic inequities, international pandemics: these are all issues that impact everyone, no matter who they are or what corner o...f the world they live in. Here in Pittsburgh and the Western Pennsylvania region, volunteers and activists have been working both at home and abroad to nurture the Global Village that connects us all. These people and organizations have witnessed first-hand the connections between climate, equity, and health and have seen the strength in what makes us different and what unites us as one human race. We will hear stories from organizations that have done extensive work in our region and around the world to heal both people and the planet along with details about how they pivoted their work and resources in response to COVID-19. Speakers include Angela Garcia from Global Links, Ozzy Samad from Brothers Brother Foundation, Michael Neumann from Partners in Progress, and guest emcee Riccardy Volcy from Continental Building Company. We will also be joined by special guest speaker Scott Foster, director of the United Nations ECE’s Sustainable Energy Division. Mr. Foster will share with us the approach taken by the UN to address all the common challenges of the Global Village through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as his efforts to connect cities around the world to one another for mutual learning opportunities so we can all expedite our collective impact towards achieving the SDGs together. #sustainability #sdgs #unsdgs #education #climatechange @globallinks @riccardy_v @un_ece @togetherbandofficial @brothersbrotherfoundation
