I knew that the more people that I spoke to, the easier it would be for me to figure out what I want to do as a careerThe Gettysburg network is so connected and I had heard that our alumni are very genuine in their offers to speak with students. I could really start developing some relationships. Learn how a J-Term networking meetup led to a summer internship at Dell Technologies for Ally Schnell ’23.

Gettysburg College encourages all of its students to expand their minds, be actively engaged inside and outside of the classroom, and critically explore their interests. Annette Aguilera-Gonzalez ’18, who majored in economics and minored in business and now works at investment banking company JPMorgan Chase & Co., has experienced this lasting value of an explorative education first-hand. It helped her unearth her passions and prepared her for the world of business.
This past Friday, Profs. Ben Luley & Kirby Farrah led a test dig with anthropology students for the Jack Hopkins House Archaeological Project. Jack Hopkins was a free black man and the former janitor at Gettysburg College who lived on campus between 1860 1868. Today, there is no visible reminder of the existence of the house, although historical records clearly indicate where the home once stood. Photos by May Lonergan ’21.

Like most Americans, honorary degree recipient Dr. Moncef Slaoui was watching the increasing spread of COVID19 this past spring with concern; however, Slaoui’s expertiseunlike the rest of usmade him uniquely qualified to help solve the problem. Slaoui, an immunologist and the former head of vaccine development for GlaxoSmithKline, came out of retirement in order to give back as chief science adviser of Operation Warp Speed. I believe our only real way out of this is through vaccination, and in a humble way, I think I have something to contribute, he said. It’s important to give back to society.... It’s important to have a vision and ideals... Give generously of yourself. If you do that, you will accomplish great things. Learn more about how Slaoui is leading the nation’s vaccine efforts.
On November 14, the CUB ballroom was bright with lights, Bollywood music, and decorations as students across campus came together to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light. At the illuminating event, students sampled traditional Nepali cuisine, painted clay lamps (diyas), and adorned each other with Henna. It felt nice to see so many people take part in something that wasn’t their culture, said Sangya Lohani ’23, an international student from Nepal. Students were o...pen to trying everything. Brad Lancaster, director of International Student Services said of the Diwali celebration and others like it, Intercultural and global events like this allow international students to share their culture in a way that other people can experience and understand. Often, lifelong friends are built around these events. Learn more about Diwali and how Gettysburg celebrates the diverse global traditions of international students on our campus. See more
