7 Questions with Dr. Mitchell, Professor of History 1. What do you listen to on the ride home? Since I walk home, it’s mostly the sound of cars driving along Ma...in Street. The past few weeks I’ve also enjoyed the occasional music emanating from open windows in Ketler and Memorial, together with the very nice soundtrack being played for the football team as they practice. 2. What are you currently reading? I like to have a bit of variety by the bedside, thus currently: Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing (just for fun; it’s one of my three favorite Shakespearean plays) A book on the history of Spanish food John Lukacs, The Duel: The Eighty-Day Struggle Between Churchill & Hitler. (a description of the Battle of Britain by a thought-provoking historian) Neil Price, Children of Ash & Elm: A History of the Vikings 3. What’s something you’ve been pondering lately? If Dr. Franklin & Dr. Mayo both walk into the SAC wearing masks, how many of us will really be able to tell them apart? How did Dr. Trueman wind up with Dr. Drake’s red pants? Is it just a Presbyterian thing? Does sport, music, art, and drama call forth more of us or less of us in their respective performances and do they likewise demand a different level of humility in order to do it well? The art we make is from us but not us, the sound our instruments make, conceivably even the tones of our voices are likewise from us, but not us. The execution of a well-designed play on the field or court is to my mind like the intricate moves of a choreographed dance, that draws the attention of the viewer away from the actors towards something bigger, something higher. To the extent that we think the play (in both senses of the word, dramatic & athletic) is about us, the song is about us, the art is about us, do we hinder both ourselves and others from both comprehending the truth of the performance and the corresponding joy such performances can bring? Finally, how is it that coaches, conductors, and theatre directors can call forth such compelling performances by our athletes and artists while I find myself mired, paralyzed, helplessly weak to stir up anything similar in teaching, especially something like HUMA? I’ve been re-listening to Jordan Peterson’s Biblical Series and have been impressed about a number of ways in which the early-modern conception of humanity and the cosmos seem to resonate with his depiction of Jungian pyschoanalysis. I’m also intrigued at the ways in which Dr. Peterson, in his personal history, his vision, and his most recent work, compares with the person and work of Walker Percy. 4. Favorite restaurant? I have two that are near to my heart Nancy’s Home Cooking - a diner in Columbus (technically Hudsonville, on High Street) Agora’s in Barcelona (sadly closed in 2004) 5. Name the movie that makes you emotional This all depends on what you mean by "emotional." There are several movie moments that I have found to be more emotional when watching them in the theatre with a very responsive audience that have left me rather dull when re-watching them at home. Likewise, if by "emotional" you mean an intensification of the heartbeat, and constriction of the breathing as the mind races towards the heroic (and one wishes one were more athletic and less nerdy), I’d say there are moments in Akira Kurasawa’s Seven Samurai, Theoden’s speech before Minas Tirith in The Return of the King, or more recently, the reappearance of the Falcon et. al. during the last Avengers movie that cannot be beat. Of the three, I’d actually give the nod to Kurasawa since the latter two have impressive music that carries you along as well. If by emotional you mean "tear-jerker" then I incline towards the opposite: no talking whatsoever. I fail to see how anything is more sorrowful than the quiet scene in Tangled where the queen reaches her hand up to the king’s face to stroke it on the eve of their missing daughter’s birthday, the musical history of Carl & Ellie during the opening of Up, and the scene in White Christmas when the forgotten general, in full military uniform, slowly descends the staircase of his Vermont hotel in front of his granddaughter. 6. What are you looking forward to today? Trying not to fail too hard to be a better son (in both senses), a better brother, a better husband, better father, a better friend, better colleague, better teacher, better customer and a better random stranger. It never works out. 7. Favorite class you’re teaching right now My favorite class this semester, as all semesters, is the one where the students are excited to be there. This semester it’s very hard to discern what class that is, what with the masks and all. But honestly, students have no idea what sort of an impact a smiling face, an eager expression, a confident pose that comes because you’ve done the reading assigned, a question (no matter how silly) that comes from you having wrestled with the reading before coming to class, what all that can have on a faculty member standing up there in the front of the class. You can have the best lecture notes, the most stimulating discussion questions, you can be teaching about your deepest passion, but when you lay it all out there and get no visual reaction that students care, it’s one of the most depressing feelings in the world. 50 minute classes can seem interminable. The flip side is that with an interested class, even the 2.5 hour sessions at night go by too quickly. I’ve taught classes involving my favorite subject matter that I simply dreaded to walk in the room because attitudes were so poor. Conversely I’ve taught subjects that don’t thrill me all that much, but yet I catch myself striding more quickly than normal into the room because I couldn’t wait to share them with the students. I’m not sure that students know exactly how much of an effect each one of them has on the chemistry of each and every class they take. Quite frankly, I’m not sure I even knowuntil the semester is over. For more Grove City College Community stories, check out our newest issue, on stands and online TOMRROW.
