This "Women in STEM" highlight honors Judith Resnik (1949-1986), an engineer, astronaut and Carnegie Mellon University alum. She was selected by NASA in 1978 and became the 2nd American woman in space. She is remembered as an excellent pilot and was the mission specialist on the Challenger mission in 1986. As a tribute to her, there is a memorial outside Hammerschlag Hall at CMU. #girlsofsteel #robotics #roboticsteam #pittsburgh #FRC #FRCRobotics #FIRSTrobotics #femaleempowerment #womeninstem #stem #learnstem #womenintech #wecandoit #womeninscience #JudithResnik #nasa https://www.cmu.edu//n/archives/2011/march/judyresnik.html https://www.thoughtco.com/judith-resnik-4587312

The campaign, #ItWasNeverADress, has a mission to shift perceptions and assumptions about women. In many aspects, such as science, technology, arts, mathematics, politics, even at home or in public, women often seem unassuming, are overlooked, or are just dismissed. Their website shares stories, focuses on community building, and is a source of encouragement for both women and girls. Check out some of these stories - or, you could tell one of your own. https://itwasneveradres...s.org/ Fun fact: Members of our drive team wear capes! This week's "Women in STEM" highlight honors Dr. Patricia Bath (1942-2019), an ophthalmologist, inventor, and co-founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. Bath attended Howard University and was the first African American female doctor to secure a medical patent. With her invention of the Laserphaco Probe, she is credited with transforming eye surgery. Fun fact: Bath earned 4 patents for her inventions. Dr. Bath was born on November 4, 1942. #girlsofsteel #robotics #roboticsteam #pittsburgh #FRC #FRCRobotics #FIRSTrobotics #femaleempowerment #womeninstem #stem #learnstem #womenintech #wecandoit #patriciabath

Today we honor Naomi Parker Fraley, known as the most likely inspiration for Rosie the Riveter. She died two years ago at 96 and serves as a feminist symbol and an inspiration for many. During World War II, Fraley worked on aircraft assembly at a naval station. We are continually grateful for her impact for women during her lifetime. #girlsofsteel #robotics #roboticsteam #Pittsburgh #FRCRobotics #FIRSTrobotics #femaleempowerment #WomenInSTEM #STEM #learnstem #STEMforkids #womenintech #STEMPittsburgh #wecandoit #inspiringwomen #rosietheriveter

Our FLL teams hosted Mr. Bob Gillingham on Zoom. He started his own CrossFit gym in 2013 (http://www.crossfitglenburnie.com/wp/). Mr. Gillingham educated the students on his goals of providing health and fitness services to his community and also entertained a question-and-answer session. The students asked about a wide range of questions from why Mr. Gillingham started his business to how his gym is implementing new safety measures during the pandemic. A recording of his pre...sentation and the Q&A session is available to other #FLL teams and provides a good resource for research on this year’s FLL project about exercise. Today, we remember Marie Curie (1867-1934) on her birthday - an inspiring woman who discovered radiation/x-rays as well as the elements polonium (Po) and radium (Ra). She paved the way for future treatments for cancer, and she received the Nobel Prize twice. Curie is a role model; she changed the world with her discoveries, making an impact in science and technology-related fields. #girlsofsteel #FIRSTrobotics #femaleempowerment #womeninstem #stem #learnstem #stemforkids #womenintech #stempittsburgh #wecandoit #inspiringwomen #outreach #mariecurie
