Hey Chamber members! Let's start off 2021 by doing some great things for our community! In honor of the life and passing of William David "Willie" Fennell, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region declared January 6th as Willie’s Random Acts of Kindness Day. The organization is inviting people to surprise someone with a random act of kindness, big or small, and then share their photos and stories with the title, Little Things Create Big Love, on its Facebook page. Don''t forget to hashtag #LittleThingsCreateBigLove and tag @Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region and @Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce!

Fun Fact Friday! Some Halloween rituals used to involve finding a husband! During the 18th century, ladies would follow Halloween traditions that would "help" them find a romantic match. According to History.com, women would: Throw apple peels over their shoulder hoping to see their future husband’s initials, competitively bob for apples at parties because the winner would be the first to get married, and stand in a dark room with a candle in front of a mirror to look for their future husband’s face. Thankfully, those traditions have died out.

Marketing Tip Monday! Step out on the streets In an online age, there’s something to be said for going au naturel and exercising a little IRL marketing. Go old school with flyers and poster in local cafes, do some sidewalk chalk writing. This strategy is most effective for locally oriented businesses, but it can work for anyone.

Fun Fact Friday! It is illegal to sell a "bounceless" pickle to somebody in Connecticut. This law put Connecticut Librarians in quite the pickle. The law actually arose as a legend and the people demanded the truth. For hours, librarians in the state scanned past archives of laws within the state until one librarian eventually found the truth in the Hartford Courant. The law was in fact an ordinance that was created in 1945 to thwart pickle packers Moses Dexler and Sidney Sparer. These two men were selling inedible pickles, so laboratories conducted experiments and found that if it doesn't bounce, don't eat an ounce!
