Organizers at Penn State First-Shanghai had planned to hold a Thanksgiving feast for students in the program as yet another way to introduce them to American cultural experiences in their own country. Unfortunately, due to rising COVID cases, the large gathering had to be cancelled. When the U.S. Consular-General in Shanghai, James Heller, heard about this, he decided to hold a small dinner himself. He and his family invited one student from each U.S. university running programs in Shanghai a little over a dozen of them, including Penn State. Yifan Zhi, a student in the Penn State First program, was able to attend the event and get pictures with the Consular-General. Many thanks to Mr. Heller for his kindness!

The final tally is in! Thanks to the generosity of our donors on #GivingTuesday we were able to raise a total of $6,935 for the We Are All Penn State Fund, and $4,425 for the Penn State Education Abroad Fund. (Not including GOLD matching funds!) The $4,375 raised for the Penn State Education Abroad Fund will provide students with additional funds for travel, lodging, groceries, tickets to museums and cultural attractions, guided weekend trips to experience a host country’s culture, and more. The $6,935 raised for the We Are All Penn State Fund will provide international students with support for activities & initiatives that help them feel welcome to the University community. This includes tickets to athletic events, cultural performances, student leadership conferences, & more.

For the past 14 years, East China Normal University (ECNU), where Penn State First students take their residential courses, has celebrated IEW. The university normally hosts students from over 150 countries; this year, they are hosting students from about 30 countries, and were able to hold multicultural events celebrating 50. One part of the week was the university popularity contest. Each American university was able to set up a booth, and attendees voted on which university they liked best. Votes were also able to be cast through WeChat so Penn State mobilized the university’s strong alumni network in China and Penn State took home the prize! Global Programs congratulates the students who organized the effort.
