It is a great honor to be able to make the first offering of a new setting of the Mass this Sunday for the Feast of All Saints. Bryan Dunnewald (b. 1995) currently serves as assistant organist at Saint Mark's, Philadelphia. A brilliant organist and conductor, he has degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and Mannes College of... Music, NY. also a budding composer, I asked Bryan to give a little background on his Mass: Good musical priests aren’t easy to come by, and so I think it’s important that composers write for them as a gesture of thanks for their support of our work. Father Kyle Babin is already a shining example of one such priest, and so I was excited to write The Rosemont Service for him in celebration of his appointment at Good Shepherd, Rosemont. For the past few years, and especially since the onset of the pandemic, I’ve been trying to write pieces that take the most efficient technical path toward their musical goal. My hope is that this piece fits such a description and thus allows the performers (and listeners) to enjoy the music, whether being sung by a quartet or large choir. Fr. Babin, Matt Glandorf, and the people of Good Shepherd are doing great work together, and I hope this piece will serve them well into the future. Hubert Parry is best known for his setting of William Blake's "Jerusalem" which is belted out at the infamous Last night of the Proms. He, along with his colleague Charles Stanford did much to improve the state of British music, especially for sacred music. Parry composed his epic choral cycle "Songs of Farewell" between 1916 - 1918. The first is a setting by the Welsh metaphysical poet Henry Vaughan called "Peace" describing the bliss of heaven as a country. The "Songs of Farewell" was a reaction to the devastation of the First World War which claimed the lives of several of Parry's own students. They are among some of the last works Parry wrote.
