Alumni Spotlight: Barbara Collier (z"l) graduated from Gratz in 1985 with an M.A. in Jewish Music. According to her son, Barbara's education at Gratz College had a profound impact on her, both professionally and personally. She became the first female cantor at Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia and Elkins Park, having started in the 1950s as a cantorial soloist at Beth David and then Rodeph Shalom. The Gratz degree gave her a substantive background in Hebrew, liturgy, and nusach, which she used to enhance the services at Rodeph Shalom. She was also an opera singer, and added a high level of beauty to the services.
