Jesus invited some fishermen to put down their nets and he would make them fishers of people. Fishing for people? What images come to mind with this phrase? Let us move beyond the simplistic rounding people up for Jesus and talk about making connections, about the interwoven net of interrelationships of influence and support? The fishing idea needs to expand beyond the numbers, wide enough to include acceptance and hospitality. Jesus is inviting his followers to a life of... engagement. Can anything good come out of Cleveland? Now before you get excited and singe me with some searing comments...I ask this in jest! This Sunday we'll explore the gospel story where a soon-to-become disciple named Nathanael asked: "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" (He would soon get an answer to this question!) What a feeling of celebration, what a joy that all this anticipation has come to a kind of fruition. Company has arrived! They are coming up the walk to the front door...whose threshold we stand. We are on the threshold of a new world. Never mind the fact that we’ve been on this threshold for over two thousand years. We are standing on the brink. We need to proclaim what is on the other side. What does it mean for Christ to take up residence in our world? What did it mean then, and what does it mean now? Those are the questions that even the casual attender has come to ask today. Persistence proverbs are a staple of self-help, achievement-oriented wisdom. We persist so we can succeed in personal goals. Often, though not always, perseverance is seen as a positive quality because it is a means of winning out over others. But for Paul it is a way to get closer to Christ. It means not looking back, but looking ahead toward Christ with single-minded purpose. Sundays at Greenstone will include worship services that contain The Apostle Paul's encouragement to "Press On." The theme for this fourth week in our "Through the Wilderness" worship series is Strike the Rock. The hope is it becomes a call for deeper living. Strike the rock means lean on God, trust in Jesus. Strike the rock means find the joy even in difficult moments, even in the wilderness. Striking the rock is trusting that there is a way forward even when it seems like there is no way. Striking the rock is a declaration of faith, even when it seems like giving up makes more sense. This theme is the inspiration of this Sunday's (9/27) weekly worship series. Looking into Matthew's Gospel (Ch.15) and Paul's letter to the Romans (Ch. 11), this Sunday's message is twofold: First, we are wrestling with the wideness of God’s mercy and attempting to answer the question, Who is included in God’s saving grace? On the other hand, we are faced with the realization that Jesus doesn’t always behave the way we think he should. Hard scriptures - but very worth diving into!
