Grey Towers National Historic Site

Grey Towers Fun Fact Friday Pinchot and Hunting It's hunting season in this region and a good time to recall that Gifford Pinchot was an advocate of hunting as an integral part of natural resource management. At Grey Towers it was a family affair, as shown in this early 1900's photo of Gifford, his wife Cornelia and their son Gifford "Giffy" Bryce Pinchot.

Grey Towers Fun Fact Friday-Happy Thanksgiving! Governor Gifford Pinchot was fond of turkey's; in fact he wanted to make the turkey Pennsylvania's state bird. His wife Cornelia sought out some turkey sculptures to place in the Grey Towers landscape. Friend and landscape architect Chester Aldrich offered two of these lead turkeys for $300 each but Cornelia felt this was too much to pay during the Great Depression. Since she couldn't accept them as a gift she negotiated a lower price and the turkeys came to Grey Towers. These 500 pound sculptures can be found near the half moat water feature. (So if not the turkey, do you know Pennsylvania's state bird?)

Improved Visitor Access at Laurel Hill Cemetery Thanks to volunteers who have re-set head and footstones, as well as mulched the extended trail and around bench...es, the cemetery is easier to navigate. A walk through Laurel Hill will deepen your understanding of Milford, and the role the Pinchot family played in its development. Public is welcome dawn to dusk.
