Not so long ago, or so it seems, (2004), I had the pleasure of being commissioned by the Dapper Dan Charities to paint this portrait of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer. On this particular occasion he was being honored, not only for his lifetime achievements in golf, but also for his humanitarian efforts. I was in charge of ushering Mr. Palmer through a room full of golf memorabilia which he meticulously signed in perfect and fluid penmanship. The highlight of my evening fina...lly arrived. Arnie Palmer was about to sign my original artwork. As a hundred or so invited guests watched in total silence, he penned Arnold first and then proceeded with his last name. With a broad and sweeping stroke of the pen, he wrote the letter P. Suddenly and uncharacteristically, he came to an abrupt halt and for what seemed to me to be an eternity. The thought occurred to me that after all the signing he had done earlier; the pen ran out of ink. A myriad of reasons for the delay raced through my brain. Overcome with anxiety at being denied his iconic signature, I timidly bent over his shoulder and began whispering, P-A-L-Mat which point Arnie turned to me and replied Son, I think I know how to spell my name. Although he showed little emotion at the time, I like to think he got a small chuckle out of that on the long limo ride home. Rest in Peace Mr. Palmer See more
