With multiple COVID-19 vaccines likely to be approved within the next few weeks, I wanted to answer some of the top questions I have gotten about the safety and... efficacy of the vaccine. 1. I heard that previous vaccines have taken over 10 years on average to develop, while this one has taken less than a year. Should I be concerned about its safety? A: No. Many global and U.S.-based organizations have plowed unprecedented amounts of money into finding a vaccine that helps prevent severe COVID. This has greatly sped up the development, and the fact that the pandemic is raging out-of-control has allowed the biomedical companies to gather the information needed to determine how well the vaccine works and safety data. The data shows it works well against disease and is also safe. 2. I heard an mRNA vaccine can change my DNA. Is this true? A: No. mRNA vaccines are a new technology that instruct a cell to make a certain protein--in this case, a protein that is found in the Coronavirus. This helps the body recognize the protein when the real coronavirus comes and helps prevent severe sickness. It cannot change your DNA; the mRNA gets deleted from the cell after the protein is made. 3. I heard Bill Gates has helped fund the vaccine and that previous vaccines that Bill Gates has funded have sterilized people in Africa. Is this true? A: No. This is a common myth that has been spread from a misunderstanding. The reasons for the misunderstanding is complex, but rest assured Bill Gates is not funding vaccines to sterilize mothers in Africa. 4. I read that people can get sick after receiving one of the doses of the vaccine. Does that mean I am infected with the Coronavirus? A: No. People feel ill because the vaccine is eliciting an immune responsethe only way to develop protective antibodies that will prevent severe disease. This response is not coronavirusit is a normal reaction to any vaccine and means that the vaccine is working. The side effects will go away in a day or two. I want to be clear that is a perfectly normal human response to be skeptical of new technologies that are being placed in our body, and that it is important that those of us who work in public health and/or understand how vaccines work answer those who are COVID vaccine-hesitant with compassion and understanding, especially during this (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime pandemic where things are confusing and scary. I know that I'm friends and family with a lot of vaccine-hesitant individuals. I would never encourage anyone to get something that would harm them, and as someone who has followed the vaccine progress from March until now, I feel confident in the safety profile of the vaccines that will be coming to market in the next few months and will be getting the vaccine as soon as I am eligible. I am begging people to ask questions to your healthcare providers or to knowledgeable friends and family members before sharing false information on social media. Sharing false or misleading information is only going to cause more people to get sick and increase the economic devastation that many small businesses are currently experiencing because of the out-of-control epidemic. The only way out of this situation is by having everyone do their part in getting vaccinated when you are eligible while encouraging those around us to get vaccinated as well. Help is on the way, and we will get through this.
