As families celebrate the arrival of spring with a visit to Hersheypark for Springtime in the Park, we’re celebrating the 75th anniversary of the park’s oldestand most iconicroller coaster! The Comet is a favorite among coaster enthusiasts and has quite an interesting history. Introduced in spring of 1946, it replaced the Wild Cat, which was installed in the park in 1923. Milton Hershey purchased the new coaster as a way to celebrate World War II’s ending. The Comet was re...markable for its time, deemed the largest roller coaster in the entire United States back then and requiring a whopping 250,000 feet of lumber. Herbert Schmeck of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) designed the Comet, and PTC also constructed it. Upon completion, the Comet promised riders a thrilling 3,360-foot journey full of twists, dips and turns. Enjoy these vintage photos of the Comet, courtesy of Hershey Community Archives, as well as photos of a retired Comet car from the late 1980s/early 1990s that Hersheypark donated to us for our collection. Have any memories of riding the Comet? Feel free to share them in the comments section!
