#HickoryRun75th As our Throwback Thursday series comes to an end, it just feels right to circle back to where we started months before...with the only feature of Hickory Run that has been here through it all. When it was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1967, the Boulder Field had already witnessed destruction, devastation, recovery and the creation of a state park. Since then, it has become an iconic destination synonymous with Hickory Run State Park and continues to ...delight the hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to see it each year. While Boulder Field has remained somewhat unchanged since it was first documented, the years have still taken their toll. Permanent marker and spray paint mar the surface of more than a few rocks. The simple act of moving and stacking rocks destroys geologic evidence that could answer lingering questions about the boulder field’s formation. It also creates dangerous towers that fall over, causing injury to those nearby and leaving abnormal jagged broken rocks in an area known for its rounded boulders. These actions are slowly changing the natural character of this ancient landscape, which hardly seems fair after what the Boulder Field has already been through. As we settle into the new park office and prepare for the next 75 years...we find ourselves asking What kind of Boulder Field and State Park are we leaving for our future generations? We challenge our visitors to help us protect the heart and soul of Hickory Run State Park. Visit and marvel at the geologic wonder we know as Boulder Field, but please leave it as you find it. Thank you for joining us for our 75th Anniversary post series. To view all the posts and continue reading, click the hashtag #HickoryRun75th

#HickoryRun75th Our records indicate the chapel was built in 1878. Chapels were often the center of a community and this one likely also served as a schoolhouse. It has also served several non-traditional purposes over the years, including being used for storage during the CCC era. While it still retains some of its original charm, it was rehabilitated in 1969. Since then, this quaint little church has been available to rent for weddings. #TBT
