269 years ago this week, merchant, lawyer, judge, and natural philosopher Thomas Hopkinson died. Hopkinson was a founder of both the Library Company and the Academy of Philadelphia (the origin of the University of Pennsylvania) and the first president of the American Philosophical Society. He even worked on a number of electrical experiments with his friend Ben Franklin! Visit both of their final resting places and many, many others at our burial ground we’re open Wednesday-Saturday, 12-4PM. : Smithsonian

Christ Church, Philadelphia’s annual All Saints Evensong is today at 5PM! The church will be aglow with candlelight, even as the dark comes much earlier. Beautiful music and readings, remember those we love but see no longer. Download the bulletin at bit.ly/3jMrMgi
The perfect Halloween adventure!
In pursuit of justice for Black and Brown people and in solidarity with our partners at POWER, we share this statement on the killing of Walter Wallace, Jr.: Dear Friends, The POWER Live Free family expresses our sorrow and extends our support to the family of Walter Wallace, Jr. We are outraged and we condemn the senseless killing of Mr. Wallace by Philadelphia Police Officers. The use of lethal violence, rather than de-escalation tactics, reflects contempt for Black Lives.... We demand: The release of all video from the killing The officers involved should be suspended, immediately, and ultimately terminated. We also demand that Mayor Jim Kenney, Commissioner Danielle Outlaw, and District Attorney Larry Krasner take definitive action to implement long-standing recommendations to change how the City responds to people experiencing mental health crises The killing of Little Walt, as he is affectionately called by family and friends, is tragic and further emphasizes the need for independent civilian police oversight, which is on the ballot this fall. Now more than ever we need Independent Police Oversight, and we urge voters in Philadelphia to vote yes on Issue #3. We can no longer expect the police to hold themselves accountable. Enough is enough. In Solidarity, Elder Melanie DeBouse & Rev. Mark Kelly Tyler, Ph.D. Co-Directors, POWER Live Free #blacklivesmatter
