The word septic in septic system refers to the bacteria that organically decompose the waste matter in the tank. The bacteria actually enter the septic tank along with the household waste.
When waste matter flows into a septic tank, it separates into three layers. The organic material floats to the top and the inorganic material sinks to the bottom, leaving a layer of clear water in the middle.
In a healthy septic system, clear water is piped from the tank through a series of perforated pipes. It then drains into a bed of gravel, and either evaporates or gets absorbed into the surrounding soil.
Did you know that each American generates 760 kilograms of waste per year? This is the highest amount in the world, in contrast with Japan, whose citizens only generate 410 kilograms of waste per person per year.
The septic tank system was invented in France by John Mouras, who built a working prototype around 1860. After successfully demonstrating it, he exported the septic tank to the United States and obtained a patent in 1881.
Like any home wastewater system, putting the wrong things into the system can create significant problems. Only biodegradable items can be flushed down the toilet. Plastics, in particular, can cause problems.
Check with septic service experts so that you know exactly what your family should and should not be putting down your drains and toilet, based on the potential effect these items might have on your septic tank.
Did you know that prescription and non-prescription medications have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas? Research shows that even the best water treatment plants do not remove all drug residues from drinking water.
Did you know that lint from washing machines is the leading cause of septic system failure? However, purchasing a spin dryer can reduce lint deposits and increase the longevity of your septic system.
Did you know that green septic systems can help you avoid contaminating soil and drinking water with nitrogen? This is because the bacteria housed within these types of septic tanks neutralize most of the nitrogen produced.
The cesspool was invented in ancient Rome. Sewage was dumped into a vat made out of stone. The sludge at the bottom was used as fertilizer while the liquid at the top that was partially cleaned was dumped into a nearby river.
It's best to devise a system to separately dispose of oil and grease, which do not easily break down, often leading to clogs and bad odors.
Did you know that a septic system only works because of the living organisms (aka bacteria) inside it? If this living machine breaks down from improper maintenance, it can be costly to restore.
